New Year's Resolutions for 'Glee,' 2011 Edition

Five Suggestions for Both Cast Members and Creators of the Hit TV Show!

Lori May
As part of my New Year's Resolutions for TV series, here are the top 5 New Year's Resolutions for 'Glee' for 2011! Having enjoyed a second season as a hit TV show, the 'Glee' cast and crew are not exempt from being included in the long list of TV shows with characters needing to make some specific New Year's Resolutions. The following may contain spoilers for Season 2, so please be advised. Links to additional articles in this series are available at the end of this piece.

New Year's Resolutions for 'Glee:' Writers should resolve to make sure Kurt has plenty of screen time.

With Kurt (Chris Colfer) transferring to a rival school, many fans have been concerned that the highly popular member of the "Glee" cast would suddenly be losing on-air time. Fortunately, the writers have managed to give Kurt his own mini-world and his own storylines, solos and even a duet-but can they maintain the pattern? While some viewers may argue that additional attention on Kurt is merely a ploy to promote gay awareness, the die-hard "Glee" fans seem to enjoy Kurt for everything he is, instead of reducing him to merely a poster-child.

New Year's Resolutions for 'Glee:' Rachel's resolution should involve a piece of humble pie.

Perhaps part of Rachel (Lea Michele)'s charm is her ego, and "Glee" Season 1 certainly showcased her talent relentlessly. The sooner Rachael realizes she isn't the only star in the "Glee" group, the better! By the midway point of Season 2, many fans were expressing more and more interest in seeing the other leading ladies on "Glee" landing solos and the spotlight. Quinn (Dianna Agron) and Brittany (Heather Morris) have both been seeing more opportunities; Morris absolutely shocked viewers with her talent in the Britney Spears episode.

New Year's Resolutions for 'Glee:' Sue should endeavor to not change in 2011.

Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) is one of the most beloved villains in recent TV history, and the character not only provides the "Glee" cast with an adversary, but some of the best jokes-often cracked at Will (Matthew Morrison)'s expense-come from Sue's brutal, quick wit and sharp tongue. The "Glee" holiday episode featured Sue as a modern-day Grinch, who sought redemption in the end just as in the traditional story. Hopefully, the writers chose that ending for nostalgia and the holiday spirit, rather than as a foreshadowing of Sue's unnecessary redemption.

New Year's Resolutions for 'Glee:' Will should resolve to focus less on love, and more on teaching.

Will's unhappy marriage and growing affections for Emma (Jayma Mays) took the spotlight in "Glee" Season 1, and continued through the first half of Season 2. With Emma getting married to Carl (guest star John Stamos), and Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig) continuing to be crazy, perhaps Will needs to focus less on his love life and more on his students in 2011. If not, let the writers resolve to find Will a new love interest until Emma's marriage subsequently fails and John Stamos' contract as a guest star (unfortunately) expires.

New Year's Resolutions for 'Glee:' The writers should resolve to select more "classic" music. "Glee" Season 2 has featured more Top 40 and new release singles than the previous year, which has been met with mixed reactions from fans. Originally, viewers could trust that their favorite "Glee" characters would eventually belt-out a single from the 80s, 90s, or earlier; in addition, soundtrack highlights were featured, such as tracks from the "Grease" score. The departure from at least some routine "classic" oldies in favor of only modern pieces has steadily eliminated some of the nostalgic charm of the "Glee," and the writers should strive for more of a 50/50 mix in 2011.
