1. The first thing they should do is send out invitations to their friends.
2. Everyone likes to look good for a party, so maybe your teen could ask them to dress in party attire. They could include that in the invitations
3. By now the decorations should have been bought, so they can get them hung up.
4. There has to be food served, of course. What you decide is up to you and your teen. Here are a few ideas that might be a hit at the party

There are many different things you can serve for a party. Serve their favorite foods, if all else fails. Don't forget to serve some sort of beverage, punch, soda, hot chocolate, or whatever they like.
5. They just might be getting to old for wearing party hats, but you can have them on hand, along with noise makers, just in case.
6. You can't forget the games. There are box game, true or false, funny face contest, quiz, answer and win game
Box Game
Wrap up a small gift (possibly a CD, tape or candy). Then wrap this box in a succession of larger boxes. Use DUCT tape for the wrapping. Don't tell anyone about the layers of boxes. Get a pair of dice and a 9" x 13" baking pan to roll them in. Get a coat, a pair of oven mitts, a scarf and a hat. Get everyone in a circle and put the box in the middle. Choose a number to roll for a person to get a chance at opening the box (it is best to start with a rare number (like four) and move to a common number like seven) Begin rolling the dice. Each person gets one roll then passes the dice. When someone rolls the number of choice (again it is best to start with a less probable number "4" and later change the rules to more common number "7")
They have to:
Put on all the clothes (coat, hat, scarf, mitts) and try to open the box.
They only get to try until a new person rolls the same number.
True or False
Write the names of each guest at the party on a piece of paper. Next to each name write several different statements that can be true or false. Give each person the paper about an hour into the evening. Next to each statement each guest must either write "true" or "false". The person who answers the most statements correctly wins a prize. When everyone has handed in their papers, tally up the true and false votes too. It's pretty funny to see what others think is true.
Funny Face Contest
Pull each of your guests aside one by one into a different and take their picture with the digital camera. Have them make a funny face and be sure to tell them there is a prize for the best face. After all the pictures have been taken, download them to your computer or laptop and have everyone gather around the monitor (or if you can burn a DVD and show them on your big screen TV this is even better). The winner will be judged on the greatest laughter.
Quiz, Answer and Win Game
This is an interesting New Year party game to entice everybody with its excitement. Call out a question on regular interval that relates to guests at the party and award a prize
7. When the clock strikes midnight, they can sing the Auld Lang Syne song. Here are the words.
Auld Lang Syne
Should auld acquaintance be forgot?
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne.
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
The year ends in a flash and the new one starts, just by 12 dings of the clock. Let your teens have fun on New Year's Eve, as it only comes once a year.
