With that in mind, you have to make a conscious decision to make something a tradition. Family discussion of what is important to them and how best to celebrate New Year's should play a part in what your family adopts as their new traditions.
Here are some traditions we think your family would love:
Celebrate together in a specific way. Our family used to visit another family every New Year's and do fireworks together. We might not see them all year, but it was assumed and understood that we would be together at New Year's. Find out as a family what activity would be enjoyable to do yearly for the whole family.
Volunteer as a family on New Year's Day to feed those in need. What better time to be thankful for your abundance and prosperity and share good will with someone who needs hope.
Visit your local retirement center. As a young child, we often gathered toiletries and paid visits to the elderly in our community who had no one else to visit them. Respect for our older citizens is something that has fallen out of popularity with the younger generation. Strengthen your own family bonds and teach your children to honor people of all ages by making this a new family New Year's tradition.
Food traditions are often associated with the New Year and with your luck during that upcoming year. Showcase those old traditions in new ways by making your home an open house on New Year's Day. Let all your friends and family know that they are welcome to stop in during the day for a bite and a visit.
Make resolutions as a family. Personal resolutions are good to have; but making goals as a family will give you a cohesive and united plan to further the interests of the family.
Sit for a family portrait at the start of the new year. When our children were small, we made sure we commemorated their growth with regular studio pictures. Many people are not as diligent about taking photos after their children reach a certain age. Make an annual photo a new New Years tradition.
Make a new tradition of trying the New Year's tradition of someone else's culture every year. At fathertimes.net you can see traditions for different countries. This is a great way to bring something new every year and learn more about other cultures and people.
Step into the New Year with a new pair of shoes and a new attitude. Literally buy the whole family a new pair of shoes to start off the New Year. There is something about a new pair of shoes that tells your mind your are starting fresh. Let your whole family mentally reset and bring in the New Year with a blank page!
