New York City Culinary School Tours & Tastings

A Guide to Chelsea, SoHo & Beyond

New York City has a huge amount of food. Were there a real food shortage in the world, the clocks in New York City would just keep on ticking. Part of this reason is the dearth of culinary schools, which dot the island landscape. Whether you are looking to take a tour for a potential student, go to a free or inexpensive tasting or if you are interested in taking a "post school" education course for a specific reason, there are a number of places that will be able to accommodate you. Below is a sample:

Institute of Culinary Education (50 W 23rd St) Located in the uber trendy neighborhood of Chelsea, the Institute of Culinary Education offers a number of programs for both professional chefs and recreational development. As well there is space for corporate clients, private events, and other essential career training which can get you to the top of the ladder in the cut throat world of food preparation. From "knife skills" to "Tuscan preparation," if it has to do with food, you can find the class here at The Institute of Culinary Education.

Culinary Loft (515 Broadway): If you are looking for something a little bit less obvious and you are willing to make your move downtown, why not check out The Culinary Loft. Built into one of the myriad of loft spaces in the exclusive SoHo neighborhood of New York City, the Loft is a great space for your food or wine event. Boasting a "warm and inviting private location," the Loft would be a perfect place for just about any event you could imagine. Stop on down and speak to one of their "wine consultants" about having your specially themed wine tasting in the city that never stops drinking wine. You and your guests will notice things like color, aroma, and taste in their more than 50 selections.

La Cuisine Sans Peur (216 W 89th St): While there is your pick of the litter in SoHo and Chelsea for culinary schools, we need to travel all the way up to the Upper West Side to find some of the finest French cooking in Manhattan. The name of the institute means "Cooking without fear" and the chef in charge, Henri-Etienne Levy has never had any fear. Whether you are an experienced chef who would just like to learn some region specific recipes or if you are a novice who doesn't know sate from puree, there is a course for you. Check out the Baking Course where you can learn all sorts of different recipes including sourdough bread, brioche, croissants, pain au chocolat, and pate feuilletee just to name a few!

Whatever your flavor and whatever your interest you can certainly find it in the many New York City Culinary Schools in Manhattan.
