New York City: Date Ideas in NYC for a Sports Fan

Lauren Romano
If you want to grab and keep the attention of a sports fan and offer them a different type of date besides the typical movie and dinner, plan a date where sports is the focus. Whether you're watching sports or playing them, it's definitely enough to get your blood flowing, especially when you're also on a date with someone that gets your heart racing.

Drop in Sports

There are quite a few drop in sports around the city, including drop in dodgeball which is $15 per person with NYC Social Sports Club. There are specific dates to play, which is listed on their website, and each game starts at 7:30pm. It's a chance to show off your competitive streak, break a sweat and work up an appetite.

Rock Climbing

The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers has a main wall that is 46' high by 100' wide in addition to a bouldering wall and a bouldering cave. While they have several climbing programs to choose from, considering it's a date, you may want to choose the private/semi-private instruction or the open climb.

Sports in the Park

If you're looking for an inexpensive option, consider playing sports in Central Park. You and your date can throw the frisbee around, play catch with a baseball or throw the football around. Bring some bottles of water, a large blanket and, if you wish, a couple of sandwiches to eat after playing.

Sports Bar

There are plenty of sports bars across NYC to choose from that will keep you busy between watching sports and playing games. One option is Down the Hatch, which has nine flat screen televisions, plenty of drink specials, cheap food and a Foosball table. It's a good date option for those on a budget, but one that can be a good time if pulled off the right way.

Sports Museum

The Sports Museum of America in New York City is a date option for those that not only love sports but want to know the history behind them. The museum offers different exhibits, a Heisman Trophy Gallery and a 3,000 square foot gallery that holds The Billie Jean King Intl Women's Sports Center, which is a women's sports hall of fame and exhibit.

While planning a sports date out in NYC, keep in mind whether your date prefers to play sports or watch them. It will help you plan accordingly and decide whether you want to get a meal after, eat at the initial destination or neither. Make sure to let your date know what type of outfit to wear before hand to avoid being too overdressed, especially if you're going to be playing sports.
