New York City: Date Ideas in NYC for a Reader and Book Lover

Lauren Romano
If you and your date are avid readers, New York City is a great place to explore your love of books. There are also many opportunities to discuss books you have read in the past and those you look forward to reading. From a hotel to a signing, there are many date ideas to choose from that are sure to impress your book loving date.

Library Hotel

Located on Madison Avenue in New York City, the Library Hotel is close to everything. The ten major categories of the Dewey Decimal System are Literature, History, Languages, Religion, Math & Science, General Knowledge, Technology, Philosophy, The Arts and Social Sciences. At the Library Hotel, each of the ten guestroom floors are dedicated to one of the categories of the system. There are also many places to read and write including in the Poetry Garden or the reading room. There are so many books to read in such a lovely atmosphere, you may want to book several days. This would obviously be a date idea if you have known each other for some time.

Book Signing

Authors are always coming to New York City so taking your date to meet his or her favorite author and get a book signed can be the experience of a lifetime. One option is to check out the website of the individual author, another is to check the events section of nydailynews.com which lists book signings. This is an opportunity to show your date that you've paid attention in the past to previously mentioned favorite authors.

New York Public Library

The library is absolutely massive; even from the outside it's slightly overwhelming. Take the time with your date to explore everything the library has to offer, from the incredible amount of books to the exhibits. With collections totaling more than fourteen million books, you can spend an entire day engrossed in books and conversation without being at a loss for what to say.

Strand Bookstore

Taking up 55,000 square feet of space there is more than enough time to keep your date occupied. They have new books, used books, first editions, rare books, signed editions and everything else you can think of. There are also shelf after shelf in front of Strand that have books that cost just a dollar. Walk around an do some exploring and conversing; you may also want to pick up a present for your date and, considering the inexpensive prices, you can do so no matter what your budget.

Coffee always goes well with conversation and books, so make sure to stop at one of the vast amount of coffee shops located throughout New York City to grab some for yourself and your date. Books can spur conversations and debates, which in turn, can make sure there is almost never an awkward silence. Compare books you love, debate books you hate and, by the end of the date, chances are you'll discover more about each other than you thought possible.

Too bad Chumley's, the wonderful old literary pub, is no more... Do they still have the old used book shops on Fourth Avenue? Or, have they been priced out of the rental market?

These are all excellent ideas! I love to read, so I’d be more than happy to go on a date at any of these spots!
