New York City Farmers Markets in Brooklyn: Year-Round Farmers Markets

Brooklyn Farmers Markets Bring Fresh, Affordable Food to City Folks

Cheryl Gaskill
Farmers markets and freshly-grown produce are not likely to be one of the first things that come to mind when one thinks of Brooklyn, New York. However, New York City is just a short drive from some extremely productive farmland in upstate New York, New Jersey (they don't call it the "Garden State" for nothing), Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. As a result, it shouldn't be all that surprising that there are over 50 farmers markets that operate throughout the five boroughs of New York City, including Brooklyn. These farmers markets provide a valuable service to those who live and work in New York City by making available top-quality fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, eggs, freshly-caught fish, and other farm products at a reasonable price. At the same time, when consumers spend their money at these New York City farmers markets, they benefit local farmers and the local economy. In fact, 80-90¢ of every dollar spent at a farmers market stays with the farmer (in contrast, farmers receive only about 19¢ of every dollar spent on food purchases at grocery stores). This, in turn, helps preserve open space in and around the New York City metropolitan area by keeping farmers on the farm, sustains the local economy, and helps to ensure the availability of a safe and affordable local food supply.

Farmers markets operate throughout all five boroughs of New York City. Some of these farmers markets are open on a year-round basis; others are seasonal farmers markets. The following is a guide to year-round farmers markets in Brooklyn, New York...
