Visiting New York City on the Water

Jesse Schmitt
One thing many people visiting a place of brick and mortar and steel don't appreciate when they are coming to New York City is the waterways. Actually the waterways are some of the best ways to see the City. Not only can you hop out to Elis Island and Liberty Island and get up close and personal with the history of this nation and with Lady Liberty, but you can get some of the most striking sunsets or sunrises around along the water. Just because summer is past doesn't mean that there aren't many great New York City ferry tours for you to consider and get a different vantage point of New York, New York.

NY Waterway: Having carried an estimated "65 million passengers," since 1986 the biggest ferry service provider on the waterways in New York City is NY Waterway (1). Not only does NY Waterway visit all the spots in New York harbor but they also are quick to capitalize on any major event. Head on out to the NY Waterway "Miracle on the Hudson" tour and see where and how Captain Sully made his graceful descent.

Circle Line Downtown: Taking off from South Street Seaport Pier 16 is another great New York City harbor sightseeing tour, Circle Line Downtown (2). Offering comprehensive and breathtaking views of the New York City harbor is what Circle Line Downtown is known for. Make sure to utilize all that this wonderful sightseeing ferry has to offer, particularly at sunset.

New York Water Taxi: Another great place which has a ton of support which looks like Yellow cabs on the water is New York Water Taxi (3). The yellow taxis you see trolling around the New York City harbor belong to New York Water Taxi. Shipping both commuters, groups, and private charters the New York Water Taxi is a great way to get to your spot if you're a visitor. New York Water Taxi also goes to the Statue of Liberty, underneath the Brooklyn Bridge, and along the Hudson River for an estimated four hour foliage trip up to see all the changing colors.

Of course there are a whole host of water ferry services which run along the New York harbor. These are three of the most popular and they should be utilized the next time you're planning a trip up or down alongside the isle of Manhattan in a boat!
