New York City Voters Oppose Mosque Near Ground Zero

A Quinnipiac University poll findsNYC voters oppose 52 - 31 percent a proposal by a Muslim group to build a mosque and cultural center two blocks from Ground Zero, another 17-percent are undecided.

The poll questioned 1,183 registered voters in the five boroughs between June 21 and 28.

The poll conducted by Quinnipiac University explored if the mosque fosters understanding or if it insults 9/11 victims. Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute states, "Opponents suggest that the mosque would dishonor the memory of the attack's victims.

Opinions about the proposed mosque range from 46 - 36 percent support among Manhattan voters to 73 - 14 percent opposition in Staten Island. Carroll further added, "Liberal Manhattan accepts the mosque and trusts Islam. Staten Island, where there's controversy about another proposed mosque, is more skeptical."

The planned Staten Island mosque would be partly built on a street named in honor of a firefighter that was killed as a result of the 9/11 terror attacks.

The Muslim initiative that intends to build a mega mosque and center near Ground Zero is named the Cordoba Initiative. The president of that Initiative is Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf and has the support and backing of the Malaysian government, which desires Sharia law.

The Burlington Coat Factory, the site for the intended mega mosque was purchased for nearly 5-million dollars; that purchase was paid for in cash without a definitive paper trail.

The second Muslim group in New York City desiring to build a mosque near Ground Zero hosted a scrolling banner on its website, removed after scrutiny, calling for help to "Build the 'House of Allah' next to the World Trade Center! Help us raise the flag of La Illaha Illa Allah in downtown Manhattan."

The mosque on Staten Island, which the Quinnipiac poll alluded to, is the subject of protest by many educated members of the community. That mosque is under severe controversy because the property is an empty convent promised to be sold to the Muslim American Society (MAS).

The Staten Island deal with MAS was silently perpetrated by the parish priest, who oversees the property to be sold, the subsequent backlash of that deal saw the priest quit the parish and then withdraw support for the sale.

MAS was established in America by the Muslim Brotherhood, although MAS now claim they don't have any links to that terror spawning outfit. MAS with their executive director Mahdi Bray have on their own accord demonstrated supported for Hamas and Hezbollah.

Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf, the president of the Cordoba Initiative intending to build the mosque near Ground Zero is the son of Dr. Muhammad Abdul Rauf, who was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Staten Island controversy was compounded by a meeting by the local civic association, which MAS board members were invited to answer questions by the members of the community.

During that June 09 meeting, MAS refused to answer pointblank questions regarding their well publicized support for terror organizations.

A member of the Staten Island community stated there is a vast amount of evidence regarding MAS supporting terrorists and terror related organizations, but for the sake of brevity asked MAS board members why they supported the following three individuals linked to terrorism:

• Abu-Ali, arrested for plotting to kill President Bush

• Al-Timimi, convicted of urging followers to kill Americans in Afghanistan and Pakistan

• Abdurrahman Alamoudi, convicted for conspiracy and financing terror activity

A highly publicized video shows MAS executive Mahdi Bray joining Abdurraman in chanting their support for Hamas and Hezbollah.

The MAS board members refused to answer any specific questions about their support of terrorism; they instead demonized those exposing their nefarious designs and connections by calling them "Islamaphobes."

The opposition to these radical organizations attempting to establish a foothold near and on sacred ground is not about anti-Muslim sentiment, but about rejecting hateful, dangerous, and anti-American pursuits.

There should be no surprise that New York City voters oppose the Cordoba Initiative mosque near Ground Zero or the MAS mosque on Staten Island.
