New York City's Gay Pride Parade 2007

Meaning Amid the Madness

Renee Morway
A good portion of the world gathered in New York City today both to be participators in and spectators of the 2007 Gay Pride Parade. The celebration was highly energized and goodwill and good humor vibrated Fifth Avenue from 50th Street in Midtown all the way to Christopher Street downtown.

Floats that one might expect at a Gay Pride Parade decorated the avenue such as: Gay Male S&M Activists (complete with whips and chains), GLEE, AMFAR, ACT UP, Trojan, Glaad, Lambda Legal, and NYC Gay Men's Chorus. Speedos, shaking bare behinds, young men with their pants down around their knees wearing bikini undies, and a man dressed as a huge green penis acting out fornication with a gal bouncing balloon boobs with big red nipples satisfied the crowd's shock expectations.

Many prominent businesses and organizations such as Verizon, Google StarBucks, JP Morgan Chase, Macy's, ACLU, NYPD, and FDNY participated in the hoopla along with local bars, radio stations, realtors and just about every type of business imaginable. They contributed an array of floats blaring eclectic lively music and dirty dancers baring almost all.

The "Males au Naturel" voiced their sentiments with signs that read, "Nude isn't Lewd, If I can Naked Here, I'll Naked Anywhere, and Viva la de Nudiste Revolution." Other than strategically placed signs, and in some cases shoes, they were males entirely au naturel and real crowd pleasers when they marched in place.

Amid the music-blaring floats, strutting drag queens, flowing costumes, bouncing bare butts, twirling purple umbrellas, floating bubbles and balloon rainbows serious statements were made. Sentiments such as "Fight HIV, proud to be homeless, proud to be sick, get vaccinated for hepatitis A & B, and Cures not Wars" resonated through the air along with pro-gay marriage and adoption rights, pro-condom, anti-circumcision, and anti-war statements to name a few.

There was also no lack of political statements as "thank-yous" were shouted out to several politicians including State Senator, Thomas Duane and Manhattan Bureau President, Scott Stringer. Support for 2008 Presidential Candidates Clinton and Obama was also loud and proud.

People of all ages from all walks of life and countries as far-off as Venezuela, Brazil, Russia, and Poland participated in New York City's 2007 Gay Pride Parade today with one unified spirit making it clear to this spectator that gay pride flourishes worldwide.

From the skyscrapers of NYC, I face strength. From the people of NYC, I gain understanding. And from the heart of NYC, I feel inspiration. So, I tend to write about the city quite a bit.   View profile

I agree with the parade however do not agree with the style of projecting ones point in public.

And the brainwashing of America (and the world) continues, with the pseudo-legitimization of a warped life-style. Change the name from queer to gay, and the euphemism is readily absorbed into the young minds. Call anyone who disagrees with these twisted people a "homophobe" and shut down the discussion. BTW, I despise so-called gays, lesbos, homos, etc., and I'm NOT afraid of them. Ergo, your label is confirmation of the intense propaganda campaign levied upon the public schools to make the lifestyle seem "normal". What you choose to do in the privacy of your home isn't my concern and I could care less. Brainwashing the children of this country is another matter.

Jamie, first of all I have not called anyone names. So it is very clear who has been raised correctly and it certainly is not you. Secondly, I did, actually, pull up video footage of the parade and watched several different ones. Sorry, I'm not impressed. Like I told someone earlier, you can call me whatever you want to call me & I really do not care. I don't hate anyone & everyone who knows me knows this and that is all that matters. Acting like a bunch of x-rated clowns in public might get you some laughs in NYC, but it will never get anyone respect or taken seriously in most areas of the country. Quite frankly, as I watched it, I felt embarrassed for the people in the parade. It is obvious most people watching were just there to laugh at them & make fun like they did in school. Sad.

Appalled -- go see it first -- before u spew off you homophobic rampage...PRUDE!!! Great Article ..yet sad to see that gay folks are still being persecuted.. I saw it. People don't know New Yorkers very well - a women with balloon boobs bouncing on a Giant green penis does not shock them -- they just laugh.. It all in fun.....
