New York Daily News - A Review

Lucie Keiths
New York is the great cosmopolitan city with many stories to tell about its colorful and glorious history. Together with its tag as a great decadent city, many about the city have practically large stories to share about days of the past and the steps taken that led to fame and glory.

Considered a big success story in New York is the New York Daily News, a newspaper using a tabloid format which started its newspaper journey way back in 1919. Now, it is considered to be one of the United State's biggest newspapers with circulation well more over 700,000 copies.

The founder of this famous newspaper is Mortimer Zucherman. He used the catch phrase "New York's Picture Newspaper," but over the years, this was changed to "New York's Hometown Newspaper." Through the years and despite several changes, the New York Daily News continued on printing its tabloid format newspaper that carried a lot of photographs. Its foremost quality was that it contained lots of news that people simply enjoyed.

The selling point of this newspaper was also its gossip column. Gossips about celebrities as well as other famous people are just so plenty and people often turn to the pages just to read about the hottest, freshest and juiciest news about the who's-who in the industry. The newspaper also contains a classified ads section, a very popular comic section, a well-read sports section and an opinion section. Its famous sports cartoonist was Bill Gallo, a well respected person in the field.

The real founder of the New York Daily News is Joseph Medill Patterson whose family were also the publishers of the Chicago Tribune. Then, the New York Daily News has also been able to establish WPIX-TV and WPIX-FM.

There was a time in the history of the New York Daily News that it almost went to the point of bankruptcy. This happened in the early part of the 1990s. Fortunately for the newspaper, however, a millionaire named Robert Maxwell, helped bail out the newspaper to sustain its operations. Upon the death of Robert Maxwell, however, his company didn't anymore felt the need to continue publishing the New York Daily News. But true to its form, the New York Daily News continued to publish banking on its distinct opinion columns. This set it apart from the other newspapers like the New York Post, also a tabloid newspaper, and the New York Times. While the New York Post has opinion pages by staunch rightists, the New York Times set very liberal standards for their newspaper's opinion columns. Overall, the New York Daily Post has resorted to some sensationalism as a counter-tactic against its fiercest competitors. As a clear proof of its prestige, however, it also has actually been able to acquire ten Pulitzer prices since 1919. For a long time, the New York Daily News has retained the reputation as the newspaper with the most creative headlines and captions for its photos in all of journalism.
