New York Giants & Jets: Good 1st Rounds

Vonda Menard
New York Jets and Giants fans are always ready to cheer and never afraid to boo their teams selections during the NFL Draft. With Radio City Music Hall full of Jets and Giants fans ready to let their opinion known, the Jets made the first splash by trading up to the 5th pick in the first round and selecting USC quarterback, Mark Sanchez. The Jets moved up from the 17th pick and only had to swap their first round pick and surrender their second round pick in this years draft. The Jets also sent three players to the Browns to complete the trade, Brett Ratliff, Kenyon Coleman, and Abram Elam. It's impressive the Jets were able to make the trade without including a high draft choice in next years draft. I guess new Browns head coach, Eric Mangini doesn't hold any hard feelings against his former team.

The pick gives the Jets their franchise quarterback, a guy who has the personality and confidence to withstand the pressure of playing in the bright lights in New York. With a new coach in New York and Favre gone, the Jets have the face of their team, someone to build around. The Jets coaches have been around Kellen Clemens and have seen him at practice and off season work outs, they've seen what he can do and what he can't do. While the Jets coaches said the right things early on, stating that they were confident with the young quarterbacks they had on their roster, they clearly had concerns. So, they bring in a highly rated QB that brings some excitement to the team. Now, they must get Sanchez some receivers and hope Thomas Jones comes to his senses and reports to the team on time. I'm not sure the Jets have the offensive weapons in place to put Sanchez in a good position to win as a rookie, so maybe they hold him back a year to give him experience and give the organization time to bring in playmakers.

While the Jets found their quarterback, the Giants already set at the QB position, filled their biggest need, wide receiver. It was clear last season, after Plaxico Burress became unavailable, that the Giants needed a big target for Eli Manning. With the 29th pick of the draft, the Giants found the replacement for Burress, North Carolina's Hakeem Nicks. Watching Nicks film, he has great hands and can take a hit and break a tackle. He'll give Eli a big target, especially in the corner of the end zone. Nicks weight gain after the combine was a concern, but Tom Coughlin will get Nicks ready to play. This was an excellent pick for the Giants. New York is now the home of two happy quarterbacks, Mark Sanchez and Eli Manning, let's hope they can keep the fans happy.
