New York Giants to Be More Frugal in 2010 NFL Free Agency

No Spending Spree for Giants This Year

New York Giants president/CEO John Mara promised changes to the team at the end of the 2009 NFL regular season. We now know that does not mean the Giants plan to break the bank this offseason.

Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News is reporting that John Mara told reporters he does not intend on having a "spending spree" this offseason as the Giants and the rest of the NFL approach an uncapped football season. The story quotes Mara as saying "We're going to do whatever we feel is necessary to improve the team, but that doesn't always involve spending the most money. I think it's been pretty well-established in this league that spending the most money in free agency doesn't always produce results."

Mara went on to say "You have to spend it on the right guy at the right time. We did spend a lot last year and I'm not saying we're not going to spend any money this year. We'll look and see who's out there and we'll make a determination as to whether that particular player can help us and is it at the right price."

The Giants were not frugal during the 2009 NFL free agency period. Just two days into March, the Giants had signed linebacker Michael Boley, defensive lineman Chris Canty and defensive tackle Rocky Bernard to multi-year multi-million dollar contracts. It has been widely rumored throughout the New York/New Jersey market that Arizona Cardinals linebacker Karlos Dansby, one of the best defensive players available, could sign with the Giants during 2010 NFL free agency.

While Dansby certainly won't come cheap, bringing him to New York would hardly be a spending spree for Big Blue. The Giants could certainly use a player like Dansby to replace the recently cut Antonio Pierce.
