I should have seen this coming but nothing prepared me for what came next, her own "reality" show, I Love New York. Let's not bother to travel down that road, let's just say I felt more stupid after every episode and more disgusted with the men who were actually pursing this woman. In short she chose a guy, he proposed and the show ended, finally. Since then, New York has appeared in the movie Are We Done Yet (Ice Cube & Nia Long) as well as a small feature of the USA hit television show Nip/Tuck. She's an actress? No, she is an aspiring one thus the new VH1 show New York goes to Hollywood. In this spin off of I Love New York, Tiffany Pollard is trying to break into the entertainment business. She hires an assistant but not before brutally disrespecting two previous applicants. One because she did not believe in pre-marital sex, like that has anything to do with being an assistant. The other was because the young woman informed New York that she needed a therapist. I don't know about you but that is the best advice anyone has given her yet.
So in show one New York snags her assistant. A spunky little white girl that seems to have her business in order although I can't remember her name. New York then decides she wants to get her body "celebrity ready" so her assistant sends her to a gym where New York goes dressed in pumps and yet another bosom buster shirt without a sports bra. 5 minutes into the workout she is complaining about being tired. She begins to sweat as her coach pushes her to press on and in the process she sweats out her horrible weave. The F bomb is dropped more times than in the Departed movies and insults flew more than the roast of Flavor Flav.
Point is the show is horrible a complete waste of network time, money and space. There is nothing entertaining about New York Goes to Hollywood just like there was nothing entertaining about I love New York or the Flavor of Love series. The American public is growing lazier, nosey and we are lowering our standards as far as entertainment goes. It amazes me at the things we accept and the things we try to ban. For instance, lets take rap music. Listening to debates like the ones on BET, Hip-Hop verses America. I heard why rap was horrible, how it degrades women and how it destroys our youth. But what about shows like New York Goes to Hollywood and I Love New York? This young, seemingly attractive woman struts around exposing her body, using profanity, horrible grammar and overall poor conduct on national television. Yet, rappers put a woman that looks, dresses and exposes herself like New York does and they get attacked. Rappers are labeled womanizers and degraders of the female races. Tiffany Pollard shows her ass, literally, and she gets a network show. So what is the message being sent to young girls all over America? Don't get into a rap video, get on a reality show and be the most ignorant, uneducated, sex symbol you can be and watch your popularity and "career" take off. You have to be fucking kidding me if this is the type of things that get on television today. VH1 has spent millions on advertising and everything else that goes into launching a new show and for what? For a trans gendered looking woman can stand in front of the camera and show the whole world just how ignorant she is. Yet we attack rap music and young men sagging their pants. We're saying its ok for a woman to lift up her dress on national television out of anger or its ok to wear a shirt whose only job is to allow your breasts to jump out on cue, that is alright. It's not all right for rappers to make millions off their hardships and stories but it's ok to disrespect people on a whim. I think our priorities are fucked up something terrible. VH1 I am disappointed in the direction you are going in the programming path the network is on. But I am more disappointed in America for allowing "reality" television to get to the point that we'll watch anything that is labeled reality. Not to make this a race thing but black people are always wondering and complaining that the rest of America view us as ignorant, uneducated, loud and violent. Fortunately for the rest of America and networks like VH1 we make it easy for them to make those assumptions. Other cultures, countries and bodies of people only know the things about other cultures and people by what we see on television. So far, in my opinion, we are not doing a good job.

Post a CommentThis show was horrible.
I nominated this as one of the articles of the year. You are so dead-on, but you already know how much I hate sagging pants. But I can't even lie, there are some seriously strong points and parallels between the two.
