New York Heroes Save Man Who Fell to Subway Tracks and Baby Who Fell From Window
New Yorker's Heroes Honored
Wesley Autrey witnesses a young male begin to convulse and attempts to hold the man's tongue down with a pen to prevent him from swallowing it. The man, Cameron Hollopeter, a film student, recovered enough to get to his feet, but then staggered and fell backwards onto the tracks. Autrey seeing the man fall from the platform onto the subway tracks did what you only see in movies. He flung himself onto subway tracks to save the 20-year-old who had fallen off the platform. He did all this with a subway train racing towards him and the doomed young man. Acting with clarity and swiftness, he placed Hollopeter between the rail tracks and throws himself onto of the man.
His quick thinking came just in time for the two man pinned down as the approaching subway train pass at rapid speed over them. Wesley Autrey not only save the life of the young man, he also saved his own. The 20-year who was convulsing only minutes before he threw his body over him made the challenge of saving him that much more difficult. Autrey managed in those shorts few minutes to hold young man down in order that the subway train would travel over them safely. 'Am I dead?' Mr. Hollopeter asked. 'Am I dead?"'
Wesley Autrey who became a real hero while his two daughters watched from the very platform he flung himself off of said, "I had a split-second decision to make". Then later said, "Do I let the train run him over and hear my daughters screaming and see the blood? Or do I jump in? This week, Mr Autrey has been the toast of the city. The New York Post called him Subway Superman. He has even appeared on a number of talk shows.
The Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, formally congratulated him. The New York Film Academy, where Mr. Hollopeter is a student, gave him $US5000 ($6300) plus scholarships for his two children. New York most renown Donald Trump awarded the modern hero with a check for $US10, 000.
Two days later, longtime friends, Julio Gonzalez, 43 and Pedro Nevarez, 40 were inspecting a used Honda when they unknowingly became the second and third Good Samaritans of 2007. The pair saved a falling toddler after noticing the toddler dangling from the fire escape of an apartment building. The toddler, Timothy Addo, 3, crawled out on the radiator before then making his way onto the fire escape of his babysitter's apartment.
Raymond Kelly, the New York Police Commissioner, said: "This is the week of heroes here in New York."
What better way to start the year than saving a life? The selflessness of these three men is an example to us all. It does not take a celebrity or celebrity name to make a difference. It takes courage, bravery, and selflessness to save another and be the hero of the day. Ultimately, the world would benefit greatly from more heroes and a lot less of the moralistic posing.
