Bargain-Hunting Advice
If one must stay in pricey Midtown Manhattan, Times Square is not a bad place to start hunting for bargains, as many of reasonably-priced hotels are found there. To get the prices down even lower, try to time a visit for the January to March off-season or during weekends, when the business travelers have gone home. Frommer's also endorses calling chain hotels directly and inquiring about reduced rates. If a hotel suffers from a high vacancy rate, this might not be reflected in the published, online room rates, so the only sure way to learn about such discounts is by calling directly.
Americana Inn
The Americana Inn is a major budget choice for the Times Square Area, located only three blocks southwest of the intersection of 7th Avenue and Broadway, near the New York Public Library. The hotel offers 54 spotless rooms with flat-screen TVs and furnished in a mid-range fashion. Each floor has its own kitchenette, a plus for long-term guests or those looking to cut down on their restaurant bills. Those savings come at a price, however, as all the bathrooms at the Americana Inn are shared, with one bathroom for every three or four rooms.
Bryant Park Hotel
Set two blocks from Times Square in a position overlooking its namesake green space, the Bryant Park Hotel occupies the landmark 1920s-era brown brick American Radiator Building. That classic exterior belies what is otherwise a trendy boutique hotel, the sort of place that served as the center for Fashion Week. The hotel's restaurant and profile increase its profile as a fashionable joint, as both are popular with the area's after-work set. The rooms are above average in size and feature a hip decor with stuffed leather headboards, starkly white walls, as well as modern amenities such as Bose radios.
Hotel 41
Nestled between the Nederlander and New Amsterdam theaters and sporting its own theater-style facade, Hotel 41 is only a block from a Times Square subway exit. The rooms are comfortably furnished in a contemporary, mid-to-upper range style and come with a pile of free amenities, such as Wi-Fi internet, in-room DVD players and free espresso and capuccino all day. However, the rooms at Hotel 41 are also compact and the views are of neighboring brick buildings for the most part. The hotel bar is a dark sports bar that enjoys a popular local following.
