New York Jets' 2011 Game-By-Game Football Schedule: Success or Failure?

Will Rex Ryan Have Continued Success?

Gary Davis
The New York Jets have a checkered history, to say the least. But if they've ever had a reason to smile, they have it now. Not since Broadway Joe Namath have they had such a superhero on their sideline. No, I'm not talking about Mark Sanchez, not LaDainian Tomlinson, not Darrelle Revis; I'm talking about Rex Ryan. He has his detractors, and I can't say that I particularly love him. However, he is the perfect man for the job in New York, and in his first two seasons as head coach, he's taken them to back-to-back AFC Championships. He now enters 2011 with, once again, a lot of confidence, a lot of bravado, and a lot of pressure.

I will be using the FB Schedules websites showing the New York Jets 2011 schedule as reference.

The New York Jets against the AFC East:

New York has fared decently well against their division the past few years, and I expect them to contend again. I think that they will go 1-1 against Miami, 1-1 against New England, and 1-1 against Buffalo. Not great, but certainly not bad. That puts New York at 3-3 in the division.

The New York Jets against non-divisional teams on the road:

New York travels to Oakland, Denver, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington in 2011. I predict struggles within the AFC Conference, with New York dropping to the Raiders, Broncos, and Ravens, while succeeding on the road against the NFC, with wins over the Eagles and Redskins. That gives the Jets a 2-3 road record against non-divisional teams.

The New York Jets against non-divisional opponents at home:

The Jets host Kansas City, San Diego, Jacksonville, Dallas, and the Giants (which is too bad for the Jets, since I hardly consider the Giants' game to be a home game) in 2011. I predict victories against the Jaguars, Cowboys, and Giants, with defeats against the maturing Chiefs and resurgent Chargers, finishing here with a positive 3-2 record.

In the end, this all adds up to an 8-8 record. It is possibly good enough for a playoff spot, but I doubt it. Ultimately, I feel as though this season will be the adjustment period Ryan has yet to experience, with the Jets occasionally losing important games they should win. Regardless, they will be a force to be reckoned with in the AFC.
