Since the franchise began as the New York Titans of the new American Football League on September 11, 1960, winning 27-7 at the ancient Polo Grounds before a little over 5,000 fans, the New York Jets offense has been led by a multi-talented group of quarterbacks.
Arguably, the most famous of the New York Jets quarterbacks is Joe Namath, whose 1969 team not only won the team's only Super Bowl in an improbable 16-7 victory over the heavily-favored Baltimore Colts, but established parity between the AFL and NFL. Improbable, that is, to everyone but the brash Namath, who predicted the victory in the days before the game and then delivered it with a steady performance by his talented team against a formidable, veteran opponent. Namath sealed his already outsized celebrity with the victory, and is forever a symbol of the New York Jets franchise.
However, Joe Namath is but one of many men who have played quarterback for the Jets, none of whom has been able to replicate his feat, but all of whom are equal members in the fraternity of New York Jets quarterbacks.
