New York Knicks Lose Again; Time to Fire Mike D'Antoni?

Ryan Christopher DeVault
The New York Knicks lost again, showing that there is something seriously wrong with this team. It might be time to fire Mike D'Antoni as the head coach of the Knicks, because he just seems unable to win with the assets placed in front of him. Even with a second superstar player on the roster, the Knicks aren't proving to be very competitive on the court. Whether it's time to blame D'Antoni or not is open to debate, but this team doesn't play well for him, and the franchise really needs to try and move in a different direction.

For anyone that's keeping track, D'Antoni's three seasons as Knicks coach has led to records of 32-50 and 29-53 before this year. With Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire on the roster, it seemed like this was a team that could at least play .500 ball. This has been anything but the case, and something drastic needs to be done by the management of the Knicks. It is just too easy to blame the players for what is going on and spare the coach from how badly the Knicks have been beaten in recent weeks. If players are going to get shipped out of town, the coaches should be held just as accountable.

The Knicks vs. Bobcats game on Saturday might have been the tipping point for fans simply hoping that the team was close to pulling things together. The 114-106 loss to another team that is more than 10 games under .500 is just inexcusable, and shows that the roster just isn't ready for the postseason. The Knicks even trailed by 13 points heading into the fourth quarter, showing how far they were out of this game before it even got to crunch time. Not only should this loss have everyone in the organization worried, but it suddenly reveals that the Knicks could actually play themselves into the No. 8 spot in the East if they don't get it together quickly.

There has been far too much talk about what the Knicks have done since acquiring Anthony, and not enough about how badly the franchise has done since D'Antoni walked through the door. The Knicks have now lost six games in a row with their current roster, falling to 35-38 on the season. That is 18 games back from the Chicago Bulls, and only three games ahead of the Indiana Pacers in the eighth spot in the East. New York has also lost nine of their last 10 games, and is giving up 105.7 points per game. Maybe it's time to realize that this roster is built better for a half-court offense, and for the Knicks to commit to a different direction in the 2011-12 NBA season.
