If you take these two factors and combine them together then you can probably guess that over the years the New York Mets have never thrown a no-hitter but several of their former and future players threw no-hitters, the Mets just didn't have them at the time because the Mets just don't have much luck when it comes to transactions.
Here are all the players that were a member of the New York Mets at some point, but threw a no-hitter for somebody else.
Don Cardwell
In 1960 Don Cardwell pitched a no-hitter for the Chicago Cubs. Cardwell played two more seasons for the Chicago Cubs and had a stint in Pittsburgh before the New York Mets acquired him in 1967. Cardwell had a few good seasons as far as ERA but never even had a winning record with the New York Mets.
Warren Spahn
Warren Spahn was a Hall of Fame pitcher for the Boston Braves and then Milwaukee Braves. Spahn pitched two no-hitters, one in 1960 and the other in 1961. Spahn played for the Braves his entire career until the last season of his career when he split time between the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants. Spahn went 4 - 12 with the New York Mets with a 4.36 ERA.
Dean Chance
Like Spahn, Dean Chance's career with the New York Mets was very brief. Dean Chance only pitched three games for the New York Mets in 1970. Three years earlier Dean Chance had pitched a no-hitter for the Minnesota Twins.
Dock Ellis
In 1970 Dock Ellis went 13 - 10 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and threw a no-hitter. In 1979 Dock Ellis pitched 17 games for the New York Mets and compiled a record of 3 - 7 with a 6.04 ERA.
Nolan Ryan
Nolan Ryan began his career with the New York Mets in 1966. In five seasons Nolan Ryan had a record of 29 - 37 and was traded to the California Angels for Jim Fregosi. The next season Nolan Ryan had a 19 - 16 record and a 2.28 ERA. The following year Nolan Ryan pitched two no-hitters for the Angels, then threw another one for the Angels in 1974, and yet another in 1975. Nolan Ryan pitched five more years for the Angels before joining the Houston Astros. Nolan Ryan threw his fifth no-hitter with the Astros in 1981. Nearly 10 years later, at the age of 43 Nolan Ryan pitched his sixth no-hitter as a member of the Texas Rangers. Nolan Ryan threw one last no-hitter in 1992.
John Candelaria
John Candelaria was a pretty good pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1975 to 1985. In 1976 John Candelaria threw a no-hitter for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1987 John Candelaria had a very brief stint on the New York Mets and went 2 - 0 in three games.
Tom Seaver
Tom Seaver was the ace of the New York Mets for many seasons. Tom Seaver won 183 games as a member of the New York Mets and won the Cy Young three times. The New York Mets traded Tom Seaver to the Cincinnati Reds in 1977. Seaver didn't have nearly as much success in Cincinnati but in 1978 he threw the only no-hitter of his career for the Reds.
Mike Scott
One of Nolan Ryan's teammates in Houston was also a former Met with a no-hitter. Mike Scott played his first four seasons for the New York Mets and had a record of 14 - 27. The New York Mets traded Mike Scott to the Houston Astros for Danny Heep. In 1986 Mike Scott pitched a no-hitter on his way to being the Cy Young.
Bret Saberhagen
Bret Saberhagen was an All-Star pitcher for the Kansas City Royals and threw a no-hitter in 1991. Later that year the New York Mets traded Kevin McReynolds, Greg Jeffries and Keith Miller to acquire Bret Saberhagen. Saberhagen never had as much success with the New York Mets.
Kenny Rogers
Kenny Rogers was another no-hitter pitcher that had a very short stint with the New York Mets. In 1994 Kenny Rogers threw a no-hitter for the Texas Rangers. Kenny Rogers played a season and a half for the A's and half a season for the New York Mets before returning to the Rangers in 2000.
Hideo Nomo
Hideo Nomo pitched 17 games for the New York Mets in 1998 and went 4 - 5. A few years earlier Hideo Nomo pitched a no-hitter for the Los Angeles Dodgers at Coors Field. A few years after his stint with the New York Mets Hideo Nomo pitched another no-hitter with the Boston Red Sox in 2001.
Al Leiter
Al Leiter started his career with the New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays but was used sparingly. Al Leiter went to the Florida Marlins in 1996 and pitched a no-hitter. Leiter pitched one more season with the Marlins before being traded to the New York Mets. Al Leiter was actually a good acquisition for the New York Mets but never matched his no-hit performance.
Dwight Gooden
Dwight Gooden was a member of the infamous New York Mets team that won the World Series in 1986. Dwight Gooden had some unbelievable seasons with the New York Mets, including a 24 - 4 record and a 1.53 ERA in 1985 but never threw a no-hitter. In 1996 Gooden signed with the New York Yankees. Gooden wasn't nearly as good a pitcher and was coming to the end of his career but he did throw a no-hitter in 1996.
David Cone
David Cone was also a member of the New York Mets early in his career. Cone's best season of his career came in 1988 when he compiled a 20 - 3 record and a 2.22 ERA. In 1992 David Cone was traded to the Blue Jays for Jeff Kent. The next season David Cone signed with the Kansas City Royals where he enjoyed more success. In 1996 David Cone signed with the New York Yankees and had a few more successful years including a no-hitter in 1999.

Post a CommentThanks for this painful trip down memory lane. It doesn't count as an official no-hitter, but Pedro Martinez threw a perfect game over nine innings in 1995. Of course, his teammates chose that day to not score any runs. He gave up a hit in the 10th inning, but won the game, 1-0.
