Brandon Dubinsky started playing in the WHL in the 2002-2003 season with the Portland Winter Hawks. Dubinsky played with the Portland Winter Hawks the 2003-2004 season as well. In 2004, Brandon Dubinsky was drafted by the New York Rangers, 60th overall. Although he was drafted to the New York Rangers, Dubinsky remained in the WHL with the Portland Winter Hawks the 2004-2005 season and part of the 2005-2006 season. He could not have been moved up to the NHL in the 2004-2005 due to the NHL Lockout, but many players are placed in the AHL (American Hockey League) after being drafted. Brandon Dubinsky started out the 2005-2006 season with his WHL team, but was placed in the AHL after about fifty games. Although he was moved to the AHL to play with the Hartford Wolf Pack, he did not play a single game with them that season.
At the start of the 2006-2007 season, Brandon Dubinsky was still with the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL, but this season, he actually got to play. Dubinsky played the majority of the 2006-2007 season with the Hartford Wolf Pack, but was called up by the New York Rangers towards the end of the season. Brandon Dubinsky played six games with the New York Rangers before the season ended and had nothing to show for it except one penalty. Despite not achieving much in his first six games with the New York Rangers, Dubinsky started off the 2007-2008 season on their roster. He played all of the regular season games with the New York Rangers, and made much more of this season, scoring 40 points in total. Brandon Dubinsky also played all of the regular season game with the New York Rangers the 2008-2009 season.
During the 2007-2008 season, Brandon Dubinsky received the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, which is awarded to the Rangers players who gives much more than is required of him. That same season, he was voted Rookie of the Year by his team. Brandon Dubinsky was also selected to play in the YoungStars competition at the 2008 All-Star game and was voted the YoungStars Most Valuable Player. In 2008, Dubinsky also represented the United States in the World Championship, and scored a hat trick.
