When most people think of New York, they automatically think of New York City. Many Americans would be surprised to learn that NY State is actually one of the top producing agricultural states in the country. New York State ranks within the top five producers for many agricultural products. Here are some of the best that NY State has to offer.

New York State Dairy Products

New York State is the third largest producer of dairy products in the United States. California and Wisconsin are the only two states who beat out NY State's dairy sales. Milk is New York's top dairy product and is produced throughout the state.

New York State Apples

Upstate New York is apple country. The fact that New York ranks second in apple production in the U.S. is proof that NY State knows apples. NY State apples are grown in three main regions: the Hudson Valley region, the Lake Champlain region and along the Lake Ontario shore.

New York State Grapes and Wine

Most people would be surprised to discover that NY State is a large producer of grapes for wine and juice. Wine and juice grape production in NY ranks third in the country, behind California and Washington. Many wineries exist throughout NY State. The New York Wine Cork, located in Glens Falls, NY and on the internet, specializes in the sale of NY State wines.

New York Maple Syrup

When thinking of maple syrup, most people think of Vermont or Maine. But, NY State ranks second behind Vermont in value of maple syrup production and third behind Vermont and Maine in gallons of syrup produced. The maple tree is, in fact, NY's state tree. Throughout the month of March, many NY State maple syrup producers hold maple events that include tours and demonstrations.

New York State Cabbage

NY ranks second in cabbage production in the U.S. Find NY cabbage for sale in the fresh produce section of your grocery store during the winter months.

Other New York State Produce

In addition to the above crops, NY State grows a variety of produce. NY ranks fourth in the nation in the production of tart cherries and seventh in the production of strawberries. NY also ranks fifth in the production of snap beans, squash and cucumbers and fourth for green peas.

Vermont has Maple wine, but it's not pure Maple Syrup; it's in combination with grape wine.
Why can't New York State get the Maple Producers together with the many wine producers and come up with 100% Pure Maple Wine?

Where can I purchase NYS Maple Wine from 100% Maple Syrup?
When visiting Nova Scotia we found 3 producers of 100% Maple wine.
Why don't NYS maple syrup producers partner with NYS wineries and produce maple wine?
