New York Yankees 2009 Season Starts with a Ransom

With the New York Yankees over publicized third baseman, Alex Rodriguez, out until May, the Yankees will start the 2009 season with Cody Ransom at third base. This isn't how the Yankees envisioned starting their season. After another active off-season which brought over high priced free agents, C.C. Sabathia and Mark Teixeira, the Yankees once again loaded themselves with talent, in preparation for a World Series run.

However, while putting their championship puzzle together, the Yankees discovered they were missing a piece. The injury to Alex Rodriguez, left the Yankees with a big hole to fill at third base. New York could have been typical, and made a deal for a star third baseman, but to date the Yankees have stood still, a rarity for the organization. New York seems committed to Cody Ransom, the 33 year old journeyman, at least until Rodriguez returns.

Ransom's professional baseball career began when the San Francisco Giants drafted him in 1998. He was never able to break into the majors with the Giants or the other organizations that he played for through the years. Then, Ransom's luck changed in 2008, when he was signed by, the Yankees.

During a late season call up with the Yankees last year, Ransom played well, hitting .302 in 33 games. While it's tough to replace an all-star player, like Arod, I think Cody Ransom may be just what the Yankees need. He's a good athlete, just ask his Yankees teammate Johnny Damon. Not only a good athlete, Ransom is known for his defense and ability to play multiple infield positions. After years of struggling to find a place in the majors, Cody Ransom may have finally made it. Ransom will bring some hunger and toughness to a New York team that needs it.

With the circus that is the Yankees, I think Ransom has been through enough to withstand the crazy New York ride. Whatever happens, it will be nice to see a new Yankee on the field who comes without the high price tag. Won't it be nice if Cody Ransom and the New York Yankees both find success this year.
