Gone-zilla!
After winning the World Series MVP the Yankees let Hideki Matsui leave to sign for the Los Angeles Angels. While it is a sign that the Yankees are looking to get younger and build for the future, it remains to be seen if the performance of Matsui will be missed. His production made opposition pitchers pay for tip toeing around the likes of Alex Rodriguez.
Johnny Damon has his Yankee future up in the air and could be another victim of the Yankee's direction of acquiring youth. The New York Post reported that Damon turned down a two year $14 million contract from the Yankees and is currently without a team despite agent Scott Boras claiming a multitude of interest in the player.
The Yankees inked outfield Randy Winn to a one year contract that ESPN reported to be in the region of $2 million. While not fitting in with the common belief of the Yankees pursuing youth, the 35 year old outfielder Winn will production. Winn is a former All-Star and his signing could be a significant hit to the hopes of Johnny Damon returning for the 2010 season.
Prior to last season Rodriguez received criticism despite his outstanding ability and credentials. Choking in the playoffs and an inability to perform in the playoffs were the popular criticisms. A superb 2009 post season put that thought process to bed and saw the man known as A-Rod collect his first ring. Going forward we could see the blossoming of a legend of the game as a Hall of Fame career plays out in search of more rings.
