Political mud slinging is nothing new in the race for president over the years, but is this cartoon featuring Barack Obama in Muslim garb and his wife dressed up as a terrorist with a gun over her shoulder out of line? The cartoon takes things a step further with a burning American flag in the fireplace behind them with a picture of Osama Bin Laden crowing the mantel.
What surprises me is that the New Yorker is not hiding the fact that it's democratically supported, so why put out such a cover? Honestly, I can see both sides of the battle. The New Yorker obviously wanted to expose the lies and rumors that surround the Obama campaign. I think it's sad in America that we hear the name Obama or Barrack and immediately assume that the person is Muslim. That's like a candidate running for president with the last name Smith and assuming that he's a Mormon, or a candidate running with the last name McManus and assuming they're Catholic. It's just ridiculous. But what about those who this cover only reinforces their beliefs that Obama is a American-hating terrorist?
Now, we all hate to think that there are people out there who are so hard set in their beliefs that they make themselves into political and religious idiots, but those people have a vote to. Unfortunately, I believe that many people will not even read the article and assume, by the cover, that Obama actually did something terroristic to land himself on the cover of the New Yorker.
Whether or not this cover will help or hurt the campaign will be seen in November. Even if it does help, is it still out of line? In my opinion I don't think its ok whatsoever. Sure they are trying to dispel rumors, but it also paints a bad light on Muslims in general. Americans already have an unnecessary fear of the Muslim faith. This cover may hurt or help the Obama campaign but it can only further hurt the image of our Muslim Americans here in the United States.
Well, New Yorker, you got your coverage that you wanted, but at what cost?
