New York's Finger Lakes' Dog-Friendly Parks

Dog-Friendly Parks in New Yorks' Finger Lakes Region

Gwyn Guess
The Finger Lake region of west-central New York state is a wonderland for visitors with dogs. Many dog-friendly motels and Inns around the lake region make this area a super place to take a spring vacation. Each lake area has different attractions; some have beautiful waterfalls, others have heavy boating in their coves and streams. And all New Yorkers can get an Empire Passport that will allow them free unlimited vehicle access to the over 200 state parks. Purchase one at any of the Parks in New York.

Dean's Cove on the west side of Cayuga Lake allows dogs with proof of rabies shots into the area on a leash. This park is all about boating as there are no camp or resort accommodations here. This is purely a place to take a dog for a walk to sniff out the countryside and the forest and urban dogs will really appreciate a getaway like this as a real treat.. For a dog that loves the water this is just one more spot to give him or her a chance to get "wet paws!" Pet owners are welcome to bring their dogs and take them out for a day of fishing or just for a spin on the lake. They allow motorboats, which is great for fishermen. Contact them with the following information: 2678 Lower Lake Road/ Seneca Falls, NY 13148/ Phone: (315) 568-5163.

For an incredible dog treat try a visit to Taughannock State Park with your canine buddy. There are no restrictions here but dogs should be on leashes if they're around lots of other people and other dogs. Located between Trumansburg and Ithaca, this Park is home to one of the highest waterfall east of the Rockies! For accommodations, there are cabins and camping sites here, as well as RV parks. This is wine country and visits to some nearby wineries are certainly a must. But dogs will love hiking around the hills and around the lake--especially jaunts through the rushing waters of Taughannock Creek. Concessions, picnic areas, and designated swim and beach areas give visitors lots to do and see. Fishing in the creek and the Lake is very popular. Call the Park for more information(607) 387-6739

Sampson State Park on Seneca Lake has all sorts of facilities and accommodations for visitors. Use the Empire Pass to enter and set up a campsite here, but definitely bring your doggie and your boat! Seneca Lake is famous all over the northeast for its wonderful trout fishing. The campground opens in later April and stays open through mid-November. Call toll-free at (800) 456-2267 for reservations today. The only places that dogs are not allowed are the bathing areas, but everything else is free range!
