New Zealand "Colossal Squid" Proves to Be the Largest

Also Known as "Anarctic Squid" Heavier and Longer

Gary Davis
Anyone who reads my writing with any regularity knows I love to write about "creepy-crawlies" and the like. So it is with the colossal squid that is in the posts this morning. The colossal squid is even larger than the "giant squid." I have linked to a picture of the colossal squid. Wait until after breakfast to look at it.

On Global News a post has been made by shezab titled "Colossal Squid" under "animal news."

We are told that the colossal squid is also referred to as the "Giant Cranch Squid" as well as the "Anartic Squid."

These creatures are rare or at least difficult to catch. However enough have been found that they are considered to be the largest squid. They rock the books between 40-50 feet long or 12-15 meters.

The colossal squid is heavier as well as longer than the giant squid. However the major difference is in the physique. It has longer tentacles and these tentacles have "hooks" on them

Further the body of the colossal squid is heavier and broader.

The colossal squid is found around New Zealand and particularly the southern tip. The largest one apparently was about 1,000 pounds.

The colossal squid is found very deep in the ocean. They are caught at depths of 2,000 feet.

Just yesterday I wrote an article on Associated Content about the Asian Carp and all of the problems it is causing us in the United States.

Why am I so interested in these types of creatures?

As I say so often I was raised in a poor area and we had little chance to explore the world around us. However, I did discover the library and found many interesting books and creatures in these books.

When I was sent to Vietnam I was stationed on the Gulf of Tonkin. This water was very dark. However creatures would occasionally surface that would show how "different" they were. An example was sharks.

Squid tended to swim deeper but sometimes their "path" could be followed from the surface.

It is very interesting how different parts of the world provide homes for so many different animals.

In the case of the Asian carp we found how dangerous it can be to bring an animal to an area where they don't belong.
