Newark, Ohio's Dawes Arboretum is 1,800 Acres of Natural Bliss
Hiking Trails Wind in and Around World-Class Collection of Trees and Gardens
Dawes Arboretum is a sometimes forgotten treasure of Central Ohio. Located a few miles south of Newark along Ohio Route 79, the arboretum features over 1,800 acres containing thousands and thousands of trees and plants.
A gift to Ohio from the Dawes family, the arboretum is a non-profit organization contributing to horticultural research initiatives as well as being simply a beautiful place to visit and hike.
Hiking at Dawes Arboretum
The eight miles of hiking trails at Dawes Arboretum transverse a wide array of interesting sights, from the Japanese Garden to the Cypress Swamp. Obviously, the trees and plant life play a starring role, but their presentation varies across the acreage. The four mile Auto Tour is another great way to see the entire arboretum.
Of special note is the Daweswood House Museum which is open to visitors on the weekends. The museum is laden with 19th and 20th Century antiques, and the gardens outside the house are also a must-visit.
The arboretum's Visitors Center is home to a large Bonsai collection with over 100 plants and trees. The Visitors Center serves light refreshments and hosts a small gift shop benefiting the Dawes non-profit organization.
Not Just a Pretty Place to Visit
The Dawes organization is also home to a variety of natural conservation and restoration programs, partnering with different local and national groups. The arboretum hosts both wetland and grassland restoration initiatives. A collection of research reports is available on the Dawes Arboretum website.
A summer concert series brought the Columbus Symphony to the arboretum in the past, effectively combining classical music with nature's beauty. Other genres of music, including bluegrass and folk, also take part in the series. The arboretum's events calendar is usually dotted with a variety of programs for both kids and adults.
Ohioans who are fans of nature need to plan soon for a visit to Dawes Arboretum. High quality hiking and a full collection of interesting trees and plants make this spot a perfect day trip.
