Newegg's "1 Ton Challenge" Promotes Recycling

Consumer electronics retail giant Newegg has kicked off a "1 Ton Challenge" to save at least a ton of consumer electronics from public landfills through a unique trade-in and recycling program. Newegg's sustainable initiative starts during Earth Month (April) and comes several days in advance of Earth Day 2011 on April 22.

Used Goods for Gift Cards

At the heart of Newegg's green project is its challenge to online customers to recycle laptops, cell phones, game consoles, digital cameras, MP3 players, and similar consumable electronics - all to keep them from going to waste at public landfills. Customers have until the end of April to help meet the 1 Ton Challenge. In exchange for recycling their used electronic goods, Newegg is rewarding online shoppers with gift cards that can be used toward the purchase of goods on Newegg's website.

Newegg is collaborating with web-based used gadget reseller Gazelle to contribute $1 for each box of used consumer electronics it will recycle to EarthEra Renewable Energy Trust, a sustainable living project headed up by NextEra Energy Resources. EarthEra's mission is to aid companies and individuals in reducing their carbon footprint and to help seed the development of various recycling and renewable projects.

Recycling or Disposal

Depending on the condition of the consumer electronics turned in for recycle, donated goods may either be resold through Gazelle or disposed of through yet another partner in the 1 Ton Challenge. Cloud Blue is a BAN-certified eStewards Recycler whose purpose is to ensure that the electronics they receive are responsibly recycled.
