The Three New Dog Breeds are:
The Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced show-low-etz-queentlee)
The Entlebucher Mountain Dog
The Norwegian Lundehund
How is that for a mouthful of dog names? There are now 170 AKC registered breeds of dogs. Here is a little more information about each of these three breeds.
The Xoloitzcuintli (click here)
This is a dog that is believed to have spiritual powers with the dead. The Xolo, also referred to as 'the healer' supposedly can relieve humans of back aches and muscle aches by placing the dog up against the painful areas. It would be interesting to hear more stories about whether or not this is true.
He is originally from Mexico and comes in three sizes:
Toy: 10 to 14 inches high
Miniature: 14 to 18 inches high
Standard: 18 to 23 inches high
They and can be hairless or coated, and will be dark colored: black, slate, liver or bronze. They require little grooming and make excellent companion dogs.
The Entlebucher (click here)
This dog was bred to move cows around in the Swiss Alps. After he finished moving the cows, his other duty was to pull a chart containing the milk to the local cheese maker. If you think that's something, he then had to return home alone. This must be an extremely powerful dog, and smart too. It is said the Entlebucher is very trainable. Think of all the ways he could help around the yard!
The dog is medium sized and compact.
Males can be 17 to 21 inches high.
Birches can be 16 to 20 inches high.
This is a high energy dog, and will stay that way most of his life. They are sometimes aloof with strangers, but devoted to family members. The basic color is black with tan and white markings are allowed. They excel at competitions.
The Norwegian Lundehund (click here)
This is a unique dog which has either six or seven toes due to breeding. They were bred to climb steep cliffs and an extra toe or two was probably very helpful. This dog has a playful personality and is non-aggressive. This dog is so agile that he can bend his head backwards far enough to touch his backbone, that's amazing!
They are reddish brown to tan in color.
Males can be 13 to 15 inches high.
Birches can be 12 to 14 inches high.
For a little dog he is energetic, loyal, protective and not aggressive towards strangers, although wary of them.
There you have three of the newer dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Post a CommentI hadn't heard of any of these either. Very interesting, thanks.
When I need dog info, I come to you. Love the new dog names...
Great article for dog lovers
I should try and get a connection with that first one you mentioned. It seems like I always have an ache or pain somewhere.
Fascinating. If you find the truth about the one who heals back pain, let me know. I don't know how I'd deal with the allergy part, but I would so love some back pain relief.
Cool read!
Neat. All three of 'em.
Very interesting. I'm glad you included the pronounciation of the first new breed, but I still can't say it!
Introducing my newest breed -- the MUTTLINSKY.
