Newmindspace in New York City

When you were a kid, chances are you had pillow fights and bubble wars with your friends - then you grew up. Suddenly those childlike moments became mostly replaced with stress and bills. Newmindspace helps to bring out the stress-free part of everyone by putting together various events that strive to bring people together. Kevin Bracken and Lori Kufner are the creative minds behind Newmindspace.

In a city where sometimes the cost of the event doesn't match the quality of the event, Newmindspace brings fun events that are free and make people happy; their website refers to it as the "urban playground movement". Wall Street, the place of money and suits, was the site of the 2009 pillow fight. It's probably one of the last places you would ever expect to see a bunch of people hitting each other with pillows.

Some of the recent New York City events was a Bubble Battle, Lightsaber Battle and a Pillow Fight. The Bubble Battle took place in the heart of New York right in Times Square, the Lightsaber Battle in Chrystie Park and the Pillow Fight in Union Square. What made the Pillow Fight even more special was that Newmindspace collected any leftover synthetic pillows to two no-kill animal shelters in Manhattan for them to use as bedding for kittens and puppies. One of the most anticipated events is Santacon, where attendees dress in Santa outfits or other holiday wear.

Through Newmindspace, more and more people are taking advantage of the chance to play in a public space surrounded by other like minded people. Thousands of people attend the events so be prepared to get bumped around a little. It is also a great opportunity to meet new people and make some friends in a rather unusual setting.

Between work, bills and other responsibilities, life can take a toll on the child in us; Newmindspace helps to bring out that buried part. Consider going to one of their events a much needed break from everyday life that we often need the memories of in order to to continue on happily through the rough days.

This makes me yearn for New York City. There's a lot of fun and play in Gotham.
