people burned and fell
fire companies, cops, plain people
fought and died in the rubble
that sweet, toxic stink
that vast melted emptiness
the smoldering steel arms twisted
igniting resistance
rushing to fill that gaping hole
extracting from the settling silence
the defiant strong beating heart of America.
