Driver Fined For Speeding On Both Sides Of The World By Same Cop

Well how weird is this for starting off this issue of News From A Weird World.

Imagine the scenario...

A driver is stopped for speeding in London two years ago, and since then has moved to New Zealand. He was stopped for speeding again on the South Island of New Zealand last week, by the VERY SAME cop who stopped him in London previously.

Andy Flitton left the police force in London and also moved to New Zealand, where he joined the police force as a traffic cop.

After having stopped the driver, who recognized him, he was asked if he used to work as a cop in London, which he admitted.

The speeding driver had only moved to New Zealand two weeks before being caught for the second time, so what a coincidence that was.

Have you ever had anything like this happen to you?

Spiderman Arrested In Germany

No not that Spiderman... but a man in Germany who had been sending hundreds of live tarantulas to the USA through the mail service.

The man was arrested while he met with an associate in Los Angeles last week, and charged with illegally importing wildlife.

The official investigation began when a routine inspection revealed a package that was sent to Los Angeles contained 300 live tarantulas.

I don't know about you, but the mere thought of tarantulas gives me the creeps, let alone finding 300 in a package.

So Who Did Invent The Pavlova - Officially?

It's been a source of contention for a number of years between Australia and New Zealand over which country can claim to have invented the Pavlova, but now it seems the question has been answered, officially at least.

The latest online version of the Oxford English Dictionary has the famous Pavlova desert listed as being first recorded in a 1927 recipe in New Zealand.

And so the battle may continue, but officially the word is that the Kiwis have it.

Rudolph Does A Runner

The Highland Park Church of the Nazarene in Lakeland, Florida, has a nativity scene outside with real deer, but a few days ago Rudolph went missing.

Now Rudolph isn't actually a reindeer in this case, he is a Muntjac deer that is playing the role of Rudolph.

A local resident couldn't believe what he was seeing when he saw Rudolph in his front yard, so he called the police, and now Rudolph is back doing what he is supposed to at this time of year, helping folks to celebrate Christmas.

Another Home Foreclosure Served But They Got The Wrong Owner

So a woman was woken up early in the morning on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in her house in Virginia, to find that she had was being served foreclosure papers for not paying her mortgage.

The problem is, the home that she was being served the papers for belonged to her parents, and they had sold it in 1994 - 15 years ago.

When she spoke to the litigation department for the mortgage company, they rudely asked if she had an attorney, rather than listening to her claims that she no longer owned the house or owed money on the mortgage.

By the following Thursday the mortgage company realized their mistake, however the woman is still going to file a complaint with the Florida Attorney General's Office because of the way that she was treated, and quite rightly so in my opinion.

The Grinch Is At Work On The Florida Turnpike

Well it seems you can't celebrate Christmas everywhere, and if you are one of the many people who work in the toll booths on the Florida Turnpike, you won't be allowed to put up any Christmas decorations this year.

The Florida Turnpike Enterprise, part of the Florida Department of Transportation, placed a ban on decorations several months ago following complaints by motorists.

Apparently some Christian organizations also complained about Halloween decorations as well.

What a sad world we live in isn't it! At this rate, there will be no decorations or celebrations of anything because of people complaining.

It doesn't bother me to see Jewish people putting up Menorahs or anything else. It's just really sad that some people see fit to spoil what is in fact a season for sharing and for giving.

Methinks I had better end this edition of News From A Weird World here before I go off on a huge rant...

@Shelley The first of these was published on the 2nd February, so it's getting close to a year. I only missed a couple of weeks. These really are fun to write, unless it's a week where I struggle to find decent stories. Some weeks I find stories that are worthy of articles on their own, like the Terrible Flightless Fly.

I love that you are keeping these up, Tony. How long has it been now?

  • Susan Slade12/12/2010

Hope the weather is better in the U.K. We have freezing cold weather here. I want to move south!

  • Jolynne M Hudnell12/11/2010

Awesome picks this week, Tony! I got a good laugh out of the poor driver caught twice by the same cop in 2 different countries. And it is sad that it seems holiday cheer is being limited.

  • Rita Oakleaf12/10/2010

Coincidentally, the song, "Mr. Grinch" just came on. Those people are grinches, plain and simple. :)

  • Rita Oakleaf12/10/2010

Good write-up. It's sad that people have to complain about every little thing. Live and let live I say. I imagine a toll-booth job is pretty boring, so if they want to liven things up with fun decorations, let them. I am not offended by other holidays I don't celebrate, either. Good grief.

  • Jill P. Viers12/10/2010

Interesting stuff. I think I would've enjoyed the rant...I was agreeing with the things you said!

  • JerseyNana12/9/2010

Good ones, Tony!! But people are so petty about decorations and this country just lets the opposition walk all over us!!

  • Linda Louise Johnson12/9/2010

Tony, can you imagine having the time and interest to figure out who to call about toll booth decor? Probably had to push 1 for English, go through an automated questionnaire, be routed to India, all to be able to say "bah humbug!:

  • Mike Powers12/9/2010

    Great job, Tony. Thanks!
