Newt Gingrich: Mosque at Ground Zero Shows Hypocrisy

Tina Molly Lang
Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin have voiced opposition against the mosque at Ground Zero, arguing that construction of the mosque would threaten our American way of life.

Sarah Palin (via Twitter) was the first to speak out when she argued that the pain caused by the attack on the Twin Towers was still too raw and implored peace-loving Muslims to reject the mosque because it "stabs hearts."

Newt Gingrich (via his website) followed up with a scathing retort to pro-mosque apologists. "There should be no mosque near Ground Zero in New York so long as there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia."

Mosque at Ground Zero: Hypocrisy

And this is not a question of religious tolerance. As Gingrich pointed out, there are over 100 mosques in New York City. There are many honorable Muslims who enjoy the freedom to practice their faith.

Yet Newt also points out that there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia, and that Christians and Jews are not even allowed to enter Mecca. "And they lecture us about tolerance."

And he argues that America's commitment to religious tolerance is one reason why we're in this mess to begin with. As he writes in a Human Events editorial, "In some ways, it speaks of the goodness of America that we have had such difficulty coming to grips with the challenge of radical Islamists. It is our very commitment to religious liberty that makes us uncomfortable with defining our enemies in a way that appears linked with religious belief."

Mosque at Ground Zero: Historical Precedents

Looking at historical precedents, one can't help but wonder about their decision to construct a mosque so close to an area of historical and sentimental significance. Gingrich draws parallels to Cordoba, Spain where Muslim conquerers had transformed a Christian church into the world's third-largest mosque complex. On those lines, constructing a "Cordoba House" at the World Trade Center site would be a direct insult and mockery to our American values.

And a writer at the Examiner cites another historical example where radical Muslims destroyed the Hindu god Ram's temple at his birthplace in India.

No one is arguing against the constitutional right to practice one's faith. Yet one has to wonder why they deliberately chose Ground Zero when they could have easily constructed a mosque anywhere else in Manhattan.

Constitutional and legal arguments aside, some things are just tacky and indecent. You don't put a statue of Wagner outside a Holocaust museum, a statue of Stalin in Krakow, or a statue of Mao in Taipei. Similarly, constructing a mosque at Ground Zero would be a direct slap in the face to those who sacrificed their lives during the World Trade Center attacks.

I'm sorry, is New York supposed to be Saudi Arabia? Cause if this is true then it's sort of like Muslims being offended their are no Mosques at the Vatican.

good lord people are ignorant. you are all morons if you are offended by the community center. morons. i bet none of you who have written against the mosque are even from new york. hell, you probably still think that the earth is 5,000 years old. wake up, or shut up.

Sure, let's send a message that the United States believes that Islam is a violent religion. That's sure to improve things.

Oh and BTW Newt and Palin: IT'S NOT A MOSQUE! It's a community center no different from a YMCA. Also it's TWO BLOCKS AWAY!

Supposedly these people believe in limited government and respect for the Constitution. Then they turn around and say that people shouldn't be allowed to build legal buildings on private property for the purposes of peaceful assembly. How un-American can these people be?

Of course Speaker Gingrich and Sarah Palin are exactly right: if Saudia Arabia won't become more like us (i.e. let churches and synogogues in Mecca), we should be more like them.

They already have some pretty good ideas like more modest dresses for women and stoning unwed romantics to say nothing of the wealth distribution system in the Kingdom.

I think we can do a lot worse than become more like them.

The mosque is tacky. Those folks who died on 9/11 didn't "sacrifice" anything. Their lives were stolen.

  • J P Whickson8/17/2010

I'm with you. It's simply in bad taste and insensitive. Unfortunately, you'll find people calling you a bigot and racist because you disagree with them. I know I have. I believe as you, there are many other places for a mosque and activity center in New York. (This is a bad thought..Maybe 9/11 was the ground breaking ceremony. See I told you it was a bad thought)

    (Finishing my prior post)

"Let the women learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence." (I Timothy 2:11-14)

The most Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that none of those existing outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans, but also Jews and heretics and schismatics, can have a share in life eternal; but that they will go into the eternal fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless before death they are joined with Her. (Pope Eugene IV, the Bull Cantate Domino, 1441.)

The emancipation of women has been a slow world wide evolutionary process.

Christian countries are far ahead of Islamic ones.

But no one wanted to get rid of Christianity back hundreds of years ago when it was far behind where it is now; rather, the idea was to reform Christianity.

The same should be true of Islam. While reform of Islam is increasing in strength, by attacking the existence of Islam, uninformed people, many of whom are bigots, are opposing such reform efforts.

    Let's not forget:

    Women during the Middle Ages:

"The women of the Middle Ages were totally dominated by the male members of their family. The women were expected to instantly obey not only their father, but also their brothers and any other male members of the family. Any unruly girls were beaten into submission and disobedience was seen as a crime against religion."

"Medieval Torture was a freely accepted form of punishment in the Middle Ages and was only abolished in England in 1640."

    The bible:

Perhaps there is another way to look at this. By allowing a mosque to be built at Ground Zero the US is buying an insurance policy against an attack on the yet to be built Freedom Tower. By attacking the Freedom Tower it is more than likely that the mosque would also be destroyed.

ISLAM IS NOT A RELIGION! IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS, MILITANT, AND VIOLENT POLITICALLY-MOTIVATED CULT!

    ISLAM DOES NOT ALLOW:

    FREEDOM OF SPEECH
    FREEDOM OF RELIGION
IMPOSES CRUEL & UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT (HOMOSEXUALS ARE TO BE KILLED, THIEVES ARE TO HAVE HAND CHOPPED OFF, ADULTERERS TO BE STONED TO DEATH)
THERE IS NO SEPARATION OF CHURCH & STATE

THE IMAM AT THIS GROUND ZERO MOSQUE HAS WRITTEN BOOKS ANNOUNCING THAT HE WISHES TO IMPOSE THESE PUNISHMENTS ONTO AMERICAN SOCIETY. DOES THIS SOUND LIKE A PERSON WHO WANTS TO BE "FRIENDLY" WITH ATHEISTS, CHRISTIANS, HINDUS, JEWS, BUDHISSTS, OR SECULAR PEOPLE?
