Newtown Farmer's Market

The Newtown Farmer's Market, located at the far end of the Village of Newtown shopping center in Newtown Pennsylvania, is the best local farmer's market in the area. The Pennsylvania Dutch brings goodies in each Thursday from 9am-6pm, Friday from 9am-7pm and Saturday from 9am-4pm, and you will not regret your visit one single bit. It's seriously wonderful.

Selections include some of the cleanest, best cuts of meats and poultry you've ever laid eyes on. The flavor is simple and pure, once I started purchasing my meats from the Farmer's Market I haven't looked back. Their veal, pork, lamb and smoked deli meats are also great picks. The prices are a bit more expensive than the regular grocery store, but the quality is far superior. The butcher's are friendly, experienced and the meats are always so fresh and clean looking.

The same goes for their fruits and vegetables, they're locally grown, fresh-picked and just delicious. We purchase as much of our fruits and veggies as possible through the Farmer's Market, as well as other locally grown vendors. The dairy products at the Newtown Farmer's Market are also wonderfully fresh, the eggs, cheeses and milk all taste that much better because they are so very fresh.

The Farmer's Market also features various specialties, such as sushi and sashimi, plattered up for taking home. The same goes for fresh seafood dishes; you can purchase a la carte items such as fried shrimp, stuffed salmon, and mussels marinara, even crab stuffed baked potatoes.

There is also a Falafel house in the Farmer's Market. Featuring Middle Eastern specialty salads, such as the couscous salad, as well as a variety of falafel or gyro platters and combination platters that include pita bread and salad, and you can select from 3 to 6 items ranging from chicken and lamb gyros and stuffed grape leaves to baba ganoug, carrot salad and the best beet salad I've ever had in my life. Side orders from the King of Filafal include hummus, homemade yogurts, seasoned olives and rice stuffed grape leaves.

Other fresh goodies at the Farmer's market include coffees, lattes, frozen dessert drinks and a vast array of desserts and baked goods such as cookies, pies, pastries and Stock's pound cake, so rich and dense, you can't live without trying it! Fresh baked breads of all varieties are also available. Dutch treats such as homemade candies, snacks, jellies and jams and nuts mixes are also brought in for us all to enjoy.

Nathali's Cuisine is the Farmer's Market's catering service. Options include various Spanish dishes ranging from Spanish potatoes which is a tortilla prepared with potatoes, eggs, onions and cilantro as well as Nathali's Paella, which is a dish featuring chicken breast, Spanish ham and mixed seasoned veggies served with lemon garlic bread. The best-catered dish is the Tapas, you can select up to six choices such as Spanish cheese, roasted asparagus and Serrano ham, Salted Almonds, Roasted Paprika Potatoes and Spanish Mixed Olives. Fresh Spanish dips include their Gausacaca dip, with flavors of onion, pepper, scallion, parsley, garlic, sour cream and mayonnaise. My favorite is their Picadillo Dip, full of tomatoes, onions, Mint, and olive oil, served with fresh toasted bread or Spanish Crackers.

There is also a Mexican service at the farmer's Market, and they serve some of the best authentic Mexican cuisine in this area. You can select items such as pork, veggie, beef or chicken tacos, cheese and bean quesadillas, huge burritos such as black bean with beef, roasted vegetable, they also breakfast burrito with is full of chorizo and cheese and they even carry a Philly cheesesteak burrito! Their nacho dishes are equally appealing, served with sour cream, guacamole, and Pico de Gallo or a beef and cheese variety. Other great picks from Dos Amores would be their empanadas and Chimichangas. Lastly, you can pick up a platter of any of their menu items served with rice, sour crème, salsa, and black or refried beans.

Zook's BBQ also has a home at the Newtown Farmer's Market. They have wonderful breakfast sandwiches available if you visit during the morning hours, and they have the best a la carte selections, such as, half and whole chickens, BBQ turkey, wings, ribs, ham, even carrots and sweet or red roasted potatoes. Dinners are also available to feed the entire family.

Another local favorite is the soft pretzel and the Farmer's Market carries some of the freshest around. Barbie's Pretzels is where it's at! They have the most amazing cinnamon pretzels, as well as fabulous sour cream and onion ones. They also carry pretzel logs, with are pretzels wrapped around hot dogs or sausages or filled with pizza toppings and cheeses before they're baked. They're exciting and interesting, as well as quite tasty!

You'll be amazed at the wide selection of treats at the Newtown Farmer's Market. The quality of ingredients, helpfulness of the staff makes for an all around great experience. We return to the Farmer's Market weekly for our favorites as well as to try new things.
