Next PSP Has No UMD Drive

Sony Working on PSP 2

Acclaim's chief creative officer David Perry is "certain" Sony is working on its next PlayStation Portable.

"I've been (for a long time now) calling on Sony to move with the times. I love the PSP, I just wish they'd learn from the mistakes and move forward. I'm really tired of new versions being baby steps, or more color changes. I can't reveal my sources, but you can be certain there's no UMD, which means fully digital online device, and you know I know people," Perry told GameDaily BIZ.

"In reality Apple has already laid a clear path for them, but Sony could compete with Apple as people would be willing to spend more than a few dollars for the games. All I want to see is a low price, high quality device with much better 3D performance than anything out there. It should be easy to plug into any PC or MAC and should have 802.11n for nice fast web browsing and application downloading. They should kill off all other ideas like Mylo and instead focus 110% on the PSP2," he said.

Sony has been moving away from the UMD format and towards digital distribution. An official announcement may come in the months ahead, with GDC and E3.
