NFL 2007-08 Mid-Season Report: the Mid-Way Point

NFC

Bruce Bostwick
The Mid-Season has passed after Week 8 and the NFC is about ready to have some challenges in particular with some divisions. It has been a roller coaster ride for every team involved in this conference and while there are some clear-cut favorites, other teams could possibly emerge as a threat regardless of what division they are in or if they are a Wild Card team. Without further delay, here are the rankings on the NFC.

NFC East

Dallas Cowboys

Weeks 1-4: 4-0

Weeks 5-8: 2-1

Status: So far still leading the division but not by much. The next few games are very critical for Dallas as they are set to face off within their division. When they play the Giants, it might be the determining factor on which of those teams could win the division.

New York Giants

Weeks 1-4: 2-2

Weeks 5-8: 4-0

Status: Who knows what's happened to them but the Giants have really done well at this very moment in time. With the bye week coming up, they have time to rest and will have a head to head showdown with the Dallas Cowboys. Given the way the season has gone, it could be possible that the game will determine who wins the NFC East.

Washington Redskins

Weeks 1-4: 3-1

Weeks 5-8: 1-2

Status: So far, they can be decent but it will depend on when they play the Cowboys. Personally, I haven't been convinced on whether or not they are for real or not. This isn't hatred but it's being upfront about it. When Washington plays tougher teams and beats them, then it can be safe to say they are for real. Nevertheless, they aren't doing too bad at all.

Philadelphia Eagles

Weeks 1-4: 1-3

Weeks 5-8: 2-1

Status: A team that has improved some but not a whole lot to be considered contenders this season. For some reason this season, it has been turmoil and McNabb has not played up to par nor has the rest of the team. If the Eagles can get on the ball and start playing like a team instead of just being a bunch of guys that are worried more about their own stats, maybe they could finish decent but that's easier said then done.

NFC North

Green Bay Packers

Weeks 1-4: 4-0

Weeks 5-8: 2-1

Status: So far they lead the division and have a record identical to Dallas. This is perhaps the best part the Packers have had with Favre as the Quarterback. It looks like a possible underestimation has occurred this season. So many questions about Favre on whether or not he should retire and this could be a way to shut up the talk. So far, it has been just that.

Detroit Lions

Weeks 1-4: 3-1

Weeks 5-8: 2-1

Status: I really have to hand it to the Lions this season. They are doing really well considering where they've been and that's a walking joke. Credit has to be given where credit is due. Kitna has really stepped up as a leader for the team but overall they are playing better they've been the last few years.

Chicago Bears

Weeks 1-4: 1-3

Weeks 5-8: 2-2

Status: This is just downright embarrassing to say the least. They went to the Super Bowl last season and were expected to contend to go back to the event but for some reason, the effort is not there this season. There really isn't a lot to say about the Bears that hasn't all ready been said. Chicago has just been plain horrible this season and there is no excuse for the debacle this season.

Minnesota Vikings

Weeks 1-4: 1-3

Weeks 5-8: 1-2

Status: This team doesn't have a Quarterback yet and the team overall doesn't have the chemistry to really go anywhere this season. The only bright side is that the Vikings haven't lost every game this season.

NFC South

Carolina Panthers

Weeks 1-4: 2-2

Weeks 5-8: 2-1

Status: Like the NFC West, this one is a rather tight division and could go to anyone. Carolina right now needs to step it up even further if expected to have a decent season and possibly take the division crown.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Weeks 1-4: 3-1

Weeks 5-8: 1-3

Status: A tale of two teams is all that can be said. While they started good, so far they are getting beat at every turn. Tampa Bay will have to play better and win games. It doesn't matter if they're close or not. If you're not winning, you're not winning. They've lost 3 of the last 4 games and are not in good shape. If the chemistry can be found, then they may have a chance to get back and take the division lead.

New Orleans Saints

Weeks 1-4: 0-4

Weeks 5-8: 3-0

Status: New Orleans has gotten better as of late and if that can be helped, they may just win the division but it's still too soon on that front. The Saints were the team I picked to go all the way this season and it will still be a challenge for them. They got to deal with potential favorites like the Cowboys, Packers, and quite possibly the Giants as well. With a rhythm they're in, The Saints will be marching and taking that division crown with them.

Atlanta Falcons

Weeks 1-4: 1-3

Weeks 5-8: 0-3

Status: Just a horrible team with horrible luck. With Vick out due to the crime he committed, the Falcons sure don't have a Quarterback that can step up to the plate. Harrington hasn't done much and for that matter not win games. If you got a Quarterback that's not winning, then quite honestly, it's time for a change.

NFC West

Seattle Seahawks

Weeks 1-4: 3-1

Weeks 5-8: 2-2

Status: Barley hanging in there and holding the lead, the Seahawks need to do better and with the next against the Browns, it could be somewhat of a challenge. Who knows what could happen on that? Hasslebeck hasn't been a bad Quarterback for them but the team can do better as a whole. For them to be considered a contender for the NFC Title, it will come down to who wants it the most.

Arizona Cardinals

Weeks 1-4: 2-2

Weeks 5-8: 1-3

Status: A surprise they are in 2nd place but to be honest, they're still losing. They are not .500 yet and if they even contend for the post-season, it would be considered a shock to say the least. Not a whole lot can be said about Arizona but they do have a shot to win the division. This actually is one of the closest divisions out there. There really much to say about Arizona.

San Francisco 49ers

Weeks 1-4: 2-2

Weeks 5-8: 0-3

Status: So far not so good. A team that might have been expected to be slightly competitive, the 49ers are not doing so at all. Then again, San Francisco wasn't expected to do much.

St. Louis Rams

Weeks 1-4: 0-4

Weeks 5-8: 0-4Status: This team is just horrible to watch. There really isn't anything can be said about them. Lack of chemistry and perhaps maybe it's time to revamp the team and come up with a new game plan in terms of winning games. While they have been close on a couple occasions, it only counts in horseshoes. No chance of the post-season for them but the only thing they can do is try to avoid losing every game and making history.

I'm curious . . . what's the future of wrestling as a high school sport? Just a thought. I'll check your aticles further to see if you've written anything like that.

Good predictions! However, I think the Green Bay Packers will keep up the momentum and go 3-0 the next 3 weeks. Good writing nevertheless.
