NFL 2009 Draft Profile: Jeremy Maclin (WR) Missouri

Rolando Cruz
Jeremy Maclin wasn't happy with his time in the 40 at the NFL Scouting Combine. The speedy Missouri receiver came into the tryout looking to best his personal record of 4.31, a mark bettered by only one other receiver at the NFL gathering in Indianapolis this year. Still, Maclin was far from slow, positing a 4.40 time for the distance, a time which will keep Jeremy's name among the top of this year's Receiving Corp , especially after it was announced that Michael Crabtree will have to undergo surgery prior to this year's Draft.

The time trial at the Combine will help bring to a close the prolific college career that Maclin enjoyed at Missouri. Last year in 12 games for the Tigers, Maclin caught 102 passes for 1,260 yards and 13 touchdowns, adding another 1,280 yards and 2 scores in kick returns. In all, it's the type of versatility and production that NFL teams will be hard press to pass up on. Along the way, Maclin strung together 7 games of over 100 receiving yards, highlighted by a 172 yard, 3 touchdown performance against Nevada.

For Maclin, his second year numbers were almost a repeat of the fantastic Freshman season he had in 2007, when he caught 80 passes for 1,055 yards and 9 touchdowns. Maclin also gained over 1,300 yards and 3 touchdowns returning kicks. In all his 2,776 total yards for the year set an NCAA Freshman record; the season punctuated by a 352 total yard, 3 touchdown performance against Kansas State. By year's end, Maclin had earned All-American honors as a return specialist.

With little left to prove at the college level, the 6-1, 200 lbs receiver declared himself eligible for the 2009 NFL Draft after his Sophomore season. A playmaker with the ability to break a game open, Maclin adds a great pair of hands, and excellent concentration to his game breaking speed. NFL Scouts are also impressed with Maclin's ability to track the ball in flight, and with his ability to come down with jump balls. Rated in the top two of his position going into the Combine, the recent injury to Crabtree might now make Maclin the first receiver taken in the 2009 NFL Draft.
