NFL 2009 Draft Profile: Percy Harvin (WR) Florida

There is no doubt that Percy Harvin is a talented athlete, and one of the reasons that the Florida Gators won the 2009 BCS Championship Game. The versatile Harvin was featured as both a receiver and a runner for the Gators last year with outstanding results. It is the same versatility that the 5-11, 195 lbs Harvin has been exhibiting since his high school days at Landstown High School in Virginia.

After a stellar prep career at Landstown, one which included a State Championship during his Junior year, and a 33 touchdown Senior season, Harvin was one of the top receiving prospects in the Recruiting Class of 2006. Much like he would do at Florida, Harvin was both a gifted runner and receiver in high school, racking up over 500 yards rushing to go with his 1,313 yards receiving his Senior season. Some of Harvin's success on the field can be attributed to the natural sprint speed that also made him a Track and Field star in high school.

Picking up where he left off as a prep star, Harvin's Freshman season at Florida was a highly successful one, one which saw him rush for 428 yards and receive for 427 more. Saving his most prolific receiving game of the season for the BCS Championship against Ohio State that season, Harvin played a major role in Florida's 41-14 victory, catching the ball 9 times for 60 yards and scoring on a 4 yard run. His Sophomore season saw Harvin improve his numbers with four 100 yard receiving games, and over 1,600 total yards from scrimmage. By season's end, Harvin had earned All-SEC honors as an all-purpose back.

Expectations were undoubtedly high for his Junior season in 2008, but nagging injuries hampered Harvin most of the campaign, and despite excellent numbers as both a runner and receiver, questions of his durability have persisted. There are questions which NFL Scouts now will have to take into account, after Harvin declared himself eligible for the 2009 NFL Draft.

At the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine, Michael Crabtree's foot injury would thrust Harvin into the forefront of this year's Receiving Corp. Harvin would go on to meet expectations by running a 4.41 forty, and putting together 19 reps on the bench during his tryout. His part basically over, Percy Harvin's NFL future now rests in the hands of NFL executive. It should be a safe bet that one of those NFL teams scouting him, takes a chance on Harvin in the first two rounds of the 2009 Draft.
