NFl Best Team of the Decade - 1960s

Olivia Cummings
Only three Super Bowls were played during the 1960s yet one is among the most famous ever played, and the other two were won by a legendary team which can rightfully claim a place among the nest NFL teams of all time.

In Super Bowl number three a cocky young quarterback guaranteed his team would win the game. Joe Namath and the New York Jets made good on that Guarantee winning perhaps one of the most famous Super Bowls of all time. The win not only raised Namath to new heights as a quarterback, it also elevated the AFL to new heights as well. Until that victory many 'experts' considered the AFL to be an inferior league, barely worth recognition. The Jets helped change that and usher in a new era in the NFL.

While the New York Jets may have changed history, winning Super Bowl number three is not enough to place them in the running for best team of the decade. This title clearly belongs to another, but they were not without competition.

In 1960 a new franchise was begun. The Dallas Cowboys went 0-11-1 that first year, and did not manage more than five wins during the next four seasons. From that point on, the Cowboys established themselves as a contender, and would eventually become known as one of the greatest franchises in NFL history. The Cowboys won ten or more games in four of the last five years of the decade and the upstart team found themselves competing for the NFL title. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, they were contended with a team and a coach which would become legendary in the NFL.

In 1960 the Green Bay Packers lost in the NFL Championship game. That game was to be the first of six title games they would play before the end of the decade of the '60s. In 1961 and 1962 the Green Bat Packers were world champions. They failed to reach the championship game in 1963 or 1964, but returned in 1965 when they won their third NFL championship. The following year the Green Bay Packers played in the first Super Bowl, which they won as well. In 1967, though they were aging rapidly, the Green Bay Packers returned to the Super Bowl. With a victory in Super Bowl II the Green Bay Packers won their fifth NFL championship within a seven year period. This clearly makes them the best team of the 1960s as well as one of the best teams in the history of the NFL.
