Hall of Fame Quarterback John Elway had accomplished many great feats in his long and very successful career with the Broncos, but a Super Bowl Championship had eluded him. That all changed when the Denver Broncos won not one, but two Super Bowl victories. This cemented John Elway as one of the all time great quarterbacks, and raised the Denver franchise to new heights, but not high enough to earn them the title of team of the decade.
While the Broncos enjoyed a great deal of success in the 1990s by winning almost fifty-eight percent of their regular season games, they also had five years when their record was 500 or less. This left the Broncos well behind the top two teams of the 1990's, both of whom also won multiple Super Bowl Championships.
The San Francisco 49ers ended the decade of the 90's on a sour note, going just 4 and 12. It was, however, the only year in the 1990s, when the 49ers won less than 10 regular season games. Four times the 49ers won 13 or more games in a season. In fact, the 49ers averaged winning 11.3 regular season games per year in the 1990's or 70.6 percent of their games.
The San Francisco 49ers won two Super Bowls in the 1990s, bringing the total for the franchise to four, making them one of the best NFL franchises of all time. In the 1990s however, the San Francisco 49ers were out performed by a franchise which has long been considered one of the best in the NFL. During the 1990s the Dallas Cowboys averaged wining 10.1 games per year, or 63.1 percent of their regular season games. Four years in a row the Cowboys won 12 or more regular season games, taking division championships, and their share of conference championships along the way.
The Dallas Cowboys, with Troy Aikman at the helm were able to win three Super Bowls during the 1990s and established themselves as one of the best teams in NFL history. Although they did not manage a perfect season, their performance on the field often seemed flawless as they did whatever was required to win. The three Super Bowl victories from the 1990s, combined with the two Championships won previously, brought the Cowboy total to five, second only to the six championships won by the Pittsburgh Steelers. While the competition was tight, the team of the decade for the 1990s is the Dallas Cowboys.
