NFL Coach Bill Parcells Retires

Bill Parcells announced today, January 22, that he is retiring. The NFL coach is leaving after just four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.

Bill Parcells, a 20-year-experienced coach for the National Football League, was rumored to be at his office every single day since the Cowboys lost to Seattle in this year's season ender. Many people thought Parcells, age 65, would hang around for a fifth year with Dallas. After all, he had only one year left on the contract extension that was signed last January - it was worth $5 million.

Surprisingly, Parcells made these few simple statements today regarding his future: "I am retiring from coaching football. I want to thank Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones for their tremendous support over the last four years." He continued, "Dallas is a great city and the Cowboys are an integral part of it. I am hopeful that they are able to go forward from here."

Parcells thanked his players and other members of his staff for their support over the years. He says he is in good health, and leaves the NFL in good spirits.

Coach Bill Parcells has had a very successful career with the NFL. He has the ninth most wins in NFL history and a career record of 183-138-1. He has made three Super Bowl appearances and two championships. Parcells was 34-32 in his years with Dallas. Before coming to the Cowboys, Parcells coached led the New York Giants all the way to two Super Bowl titles before leaving them because of health problems. He also took the New England Patriots to a Super Bowl and led the New York Jets to an AFC title game.

After those glorious years, Parcells turned away from a job on ESPN television so that he could go to Dallas and coach the Cowboys . According to ESPN, the Cowboys went from three straight five-win seasons before Parcells arrived to 10-6 and into the playoffs in his first season in 2003. The same year, owner Jones and Parcells persuaded Arlington, Texas voters to adopt a tax hike for a $325 million stadium.

Now team owner Jerry Jones has to start thinking about a new hire. This will be the Cowboy's seventh coach in their team's history. Parcells became the first NFL coach in history to lead four different football teams to the playoffs. I think it's safe for some to say that Bill leaves behind big shoes to fill.
