NFL Draft: Kansas City Chiefs Draft Breakdown

The Scott Pioli era is officially in full swing now with another NFL Draft under his belt. Pioli the Kansas City general manager, also added a veteran presence with running back Thomas Jones and some solid prospects for the 2010 NFL season. Kansas City added the best secondary player in the draft and and with two picks in the second round Kansas City added another solid secondary prospect and depth with another running back.

Pioli and the Kansas City staff drafted heavily out of the SEC with two safeties and one cornerback in an attempt to stop the bleeding from a weak secondary. Kansas City also drafted a special teams stand out from the SEC in Dexter McCluster.

Kansas City Chiefs first NFL Draft pick and 5th overall Eric Berry.
Eric Berry, a safety out of Tennessee is the best secondary prospect of the NFL Draft. Berry will hit the ground running and be expected to play in the first game of the NFL season. Berry is a smart defender that can break up passes and read the quarterback and the receiver also. Berry has excellent timing and was used by Tennessee to blitz in passing situations. Berry is the perfect example of a ball hawking safety, he will play from day one of his NFL career and make an immediate impact.

Kansas City Chiefs second NFL Draft pick and 36th overall Dexter McCluster.
The backfield in Kansas City is crowded and Dexter McCluster, a running back out of Mississippi, will have to earn his way onto the squad by showing his versatility as a slot wide receiver. McCluster is a possible premier return man in the NFL and that could address another need for Kansas City. McCluster will make the Kansas City opening game roster and will see full time on special teams and spot duty as a slot wide receiver.

Kansas City Chiefs third NFL Draft pick and 50th overall Javier Arenas.
Javier Arenas is a another SEC standout cornerback out of Alabama, that will be hard pressed to make the Kansas City roster. Arenas is gifted and will have every opportunity to start as a corner in the 2010 NFL season.
The Kansas City defensive coordinator, Romeo Crennel will be happy if Arenas makes the team and he can shuttle him in and out for special defensive schemes.

Arenas has good instincts and deceptive speed, although he was a return man in college he will get an opportunity to return kicks in the NFL. His speed may not translate to the NFL but time will tell if he can adjust. Arenas will play sparingly on defense for the 2010 NFL season.

Kansas City Chiefs fourth NFL Draft pick and 68th overall Jon Asamoah.
Jon Asamoah the offensive guard out of Illinois is a big man that will provide some much need size on the Kansas City line. Asamoah may not start right away but will see a lot of playing time in the 2010 NFL season.

Kansas City Chiefs fifth NFL Draft pick and 93rd overall Tony Moeaki.
Tony Moeaki, the tight end from Iowa will bring with him, some superior blocking skills at the tight end position. NFL teams are now starting to realize that the tight end position is critical to the success of the run game. Moeaki may not start but he will be rotated in on first and second down situations.

Kansas City Chiefs sixth NFL Draft pick and 136th overall Kendrick Lewis.
Kendrick Lewis a free safety also from Mississippi is the third secondary prospect hailing from the defensive minded SEC. Lewis is another SEC player with incredible instincts attacking the ball. Lewis is a solid cover guy that doesn't have much pop when hitting a receiver or runner in the open field. Lewis will play for the Chiefs in the 2010 NFL season and with the condition of the Kansas City safeties and corners Lewis should be starting by mid season.

Kansas City Chiefs seventh & last NFL Draft pick and 142nd overall Cameron Sheffield.
Cameron Sheffield a defensive end from Troy is a solid pass rusher, with quick moves out of the knee down position and an exemplary tackle at the point of attack. Sheffield will learn from the bench and in practice his first year of NFL duty but he will see playing time late in games.
