NFL Draft Player Breakdown: Glenn Dorsey

St. Louis Needs to Draft Dorsey at #2

"With the 2nd pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams select...Glenn Dorsey, Louisiana State University."

Yes, this will be the announcement commissioner Roger Goodell will be making shortly after this year's draft begins. It seems that Miami has settled on DE Chris Long of Virginia Tech for the 1st overall pick. The Rams should feel lucky to have the chance to draft Dorsey because in most other years, he would be the #1 overall pick.

Dorsey stands at 6' 2" and tips the scales at 303 lbs. The man is a load in the middle and demands to be double teamed. Thos few opponents that tried to take him in a one-on-one match had their whole game plan destroyed. Dorsey is that good as a defensive tackle.

He has the perfect blend of explosiveness, strength, and speed to be a dominant defensive player. Dorsey only has two things working against him. The first is that he has short arms; this causes blockers to occasionally be able to get in tight on him. Secondly, Dorsey battled a sore knee for the entire second half of his senior season, but this seems to have become downplayed among most scouts. Some even use it as a plus--it shows Dorsey's heart and toughness.

In his senior season, Dorsey registered 64 tackles, 11.5 for losses, along with 6 sacks (http://www.fftoolbox.com). He also won three big awards: the Bronko Nagurski Award for Defensive Player of the Year, the Vince Lombardi Award for Outstanding Lineman, and the Outland Trophy for Most Outstanding Interior Lineman.

Should the Rams decide to draft Dorsey, they immediately become a team that cannot smother an opponent's running game. They are given the flexibility to move last year's first round pick, Adam Carriker, to defensive end. Not only would the Rams be able to stop the run, but most likely would have great success rushing the QB even if they only send their front four.

The Rams have also considered taking offensive tackle Jake Long of Michigan. Recently, some experts have ranked USC defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis ahead of Dorsey, giving the Rams a third option. However, it is difficult to pass up on such a gifted athlete at the size Dorsey is.
