The NFL has injured reserve available for NFL teams so each team has a fair shot at winning...what I mean is that if a team were to lose a lot of players to injury and weren't able to place them in a non-available status and replace them then teams such as this year's New York Giants would be in a world of hurt competitively. The Giants who this year have already placed 10 players on the injured reserve list may replace these injured players on the active roster: of course they will replace these players.
The following list is something I compiled by looking through all the opening day rosters of each NFL team: there are already 117 players on injured reserve adding up all the 32 NFL team's individual totals. As I sifted through the 32 team rosters I was astounded the New York Giants have already amassed a huge total of 10 on this list while Jacksonville is the nearest to them with 8. Only one team--the Atlanta Falcons--have no one on the list...five teams have just one player in this undesirable status.
The Super Bowl champ Green Bay Packers of 2011 have only 2 players on this list in the early going of the 2011 season: for much of the 2010 season they led the NFL in players on this list...times change, players rehabilitate and players learn to adapt to the long season by listening to trainers and getting and heeding well thought out advice from their team's training staffs.
Here are each NFL team's total number of players on the injured list...this number, as I mentioned, reflects the number of players that will have to be replaced because injured reserve status means they're out for the season.
