NFL Mock Draft 2008-Revamped

Woody's What If Scenarios Are Back!

Michael Grisso
Yep, there won't be enough time to write up another one of these NFL mock draft lists before it takes place April 26th-27th. For those of you who love this time of year, get ready to sit back and enjoy a different thought process about how NFL draft picks are taken this year with an added twist. If you missed my last edition in December of 2007, its amazing to see what transactions have transpired in four short months.

I have yet to meet anyone outside of my brother who can sit and watch the entire NFL draft for two days going through every single round. However, his abilities to do this has enticed me to become more knowledgeable about the all around players and making for an interesting NFL mock draft to say the least. Enough of me gabbing, let's get to it!

1st pick-Miami Dolphins- So, you have all of fifteen minutes to make the overall #1 NFL mock draft pick, who do you take? You've spent the last month and a half signing DT Jason Ferguson from Dallas, LBs Ian Gold, Reggie Torbor and Charlie Anderson, along with several others and cut ties with the team's dead weight. McCown comes in from Oakland with six years in amongst the land of basically QB noobs. Don't listen to the hoopla about Matt Ryan, its just not going to happen because even though he has the build, he doesn't have a #1 overall value as superstars prior. Many believe its a cinch Michigan OT Jake Long will be this year's NFL draft homerun for the Fins (I still do).

What Does Woody Think: Hey, lets get real here. Will Miami be able to land the big deal with Long? Talks have already sputtered and with a questionable Ronnie Brown with the marijuana man Ricky Williams, Patrick Cobbs, Samkon Gado and Lorenzo Booker being the possible backfield I have other other plans. Give me someone to that is going to get the 1-15 embarrassment of 2007 something to instantly talk about and market to the fans.

Woody's NFL Mock Draft Pick: Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
Real Pick: Jake Long, OT, Michigan

2nd pick-St. Louis Rams- The Rams said goodbye to longtime WR Isaac Bruce and for some reason thought it was a good idea to sign another concussion boy in Trent Green to pair up with Bulger. This can only mean the OL is going to be getting stronger with the second pick of the NFL draft. They really haven't done much in the offseason for a team that went 3-13 in 2007. Securing Bell and Goldberg to long term contracts was a clear sign of how important it is going to be to protect Bulger. Will they hop the fence and take Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio State (If they're smart they will) after his sick combine? They should, but since this is supposed to be fun we've got other plans.

What Does Woody Think: Okay, lets look back for a second. This team should have flourished on offense last season, but thanks to injuries with Bulger, Jackson and a hobbling Holt throughout the year they could never get anything going. I need the QB safe all year "Long".

Woody's NFL Mock Draft Pick: Jake Long, OT, Michigan
Real Pick: Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio State

3rd pick-Atlanta Falcons- Known for the dog killer in 2007 to Super Bowl contenders in 2008? Okay, its a little much, but they've definitely turned the corner with new coach Mike Smith. Michael Turner was a huge pickup for the Dirty Birds, but don't expect the same numbers like he got in the fill in role for the Chargers. Unless of course they open up some huge holes. Can he carry a full load the entire year? I don't think so, at least not without getting hurt anyways.

Harrington got a week off for vacation time before they signed him again only 7 days after releasing him. Where will they go from here? I've been hearing a lot of Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU buzzing around, but who wants to put their NFL mock draft pick hopes on someone who has been hurt in more recent years. Not I said the cow, so lets look elsewhere for fun (even though he'll be the one).

What Does Woody Think: Re-signing Chris Redman and The Piano Man was ahuge step in telling us they aren't as interested in Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College like everyone previously thought. I'm sure the hopes are for Turner to open up the passing game and take a lot of pressure off of Redman. They re-signed DTs Moorehead and Moore, along with DE Simon Fraser. This one was hard to decide, but we have to go back and think about the LSU boy and getting cozy on the turf.

Woody's NFL Mock Draft Pick: Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU
Real Pick: Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas

4th pick-Oakland Raiders- Are you kidding me? With daddy screaming "Take My Boy!!!" in the background, who do you have here? Many of you probably have someone like McFadden looming, but we like the Virginia boy just because of the name. Okay, he's a hell of a DE, but will he step out of papa Howie's shadow in the Silver and Black? Only time will tell.

Woody's NFL Mock Draft Pick: Chris Long, DE, Virginia
Real Pick: Chris Long, DE, Virginia

5th pick-Kansas City Chiefs- Okay really no revelance to the draft, but all I have to say is POOR SCOTT COVINGTON! I remember that guy hangin' around as a stringer in the Bengals organization forever ago and he got cut by K.C. towards the end of March. Anyways, back the NFL mock draft, I never understand the Chiefs. You have Larry Johnson, Tony Gonzalez, and Dwayne Bowe, yet still like Brodie Croyle to throw to them?

What Does Woody Think: Personally? They could go a lot of different routes here so unless they say, "Hey we are picking so and so" don't expect them to have an easy choice. With Jake Long gone is taking someone like Clady or Utah too early with the 5th pick? Would they be taking a risk with drafting Ryan here? If money wasn't an issue it would be cool to see the Bengals trade up and get rid of Johnson with maybe another pick involved, then K.C. would have Gonzo, Ocho Cinco, and Johnson, plus Bowe to compliment taking a lot of pressure off of Croyle. Fun thinking anyways. They really could use a DE though now that Allen is gone and get an OT and QB later. This is a no brainer here.

Woody's NFL Mock Draft Pick: Vernon Gholston DE, Ohio State
Real Pick: Derrick Harvey, DE, Florida

6th pick-N.Y. Jets-
There is nothing like listening to the Jets fans boo with there picks every year. I think taking Vilma in 2004 was the most recent year they had an impact player from the first round and I don't remember if they booed that pick or not. Plus he's with the Saints now anyways. This year definitely won't be the case if their smart. They do have a couple options here. Both revolve around defense for all you "We want a Quarterback!" fans out there.

What Does Woody Think: They might go after another CB since they tried to snag Asante Samuel and his hefty price tag. However, with who's left on the board its really a no brainer and a happy ending for the Jets faithful.

Woody's NFL Mock Draft Pick: Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC
Real Pick:
Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy State

7th pick-New England (from San Franciso)- Alright, how do you regroup from scandal, a perfect season null and void in the Super Bowl, and losing your top CB to the Eagles? Pffffff, this is the Pats we're talking about here and 2008 will be just another normal day at the office. Re-signing Bruschi and Moss pretty much was their offseason. Adding a few players here and there like CB Fernando Bryant gives a hint they may not actually be looking for a cornerback with this pick.

What Does Woody Think: Yes, both Gay and Samuel left New England, but to be quite honest the corner position is loaded with some great NFL talent and someone will fall to them in the second round. I wouldn't be suprised if they look towards a DE or DT, but in the end you just never know what hoodie is going to do. We'll find out soon.

Woody's NFL Mock Draft Pick: Derrick Harvey, DE, Florida
Real Pick: Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC

8th pick-Baltimore Ravens- Oh the Ravens will be licking their chops with all the possibilities here. They need help in so many places and not knowing the Ogden situation could throw down Clady here. Their secondary however needs to be addressed with a capital A. It will be interesting to see Newsome and Harbaugh try to agree on the best interests of the team here.

What Does Woody Think: Well, they haven't really done much in the offseason which leads me to believe they will want to get someone with multiple talents, especially special teams. Even with the 2008 version of Brady Quinn in this draft still available, Matt Ryan is not going to help keep anyone from scoring. Stick with defense and if they plan on getting a QB wait until their next pick. I believe there are others out there who could have a much better NFL career then Mr. Boston College.

Woody's NFL Mock Draft Pick: Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy State
Real Pick: Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College

9th pick-Cincinnati Bengals- Alright, your a Cincy fan you have Chad Johnson demanding a trade, Chris Henry gone after his 20 millionth problem with the law and you're left with T.J. Houshmandzadeh left as your #1 wideout? Uh, that won't happen and even though Marvin Lewis is still telling everyone C.J. is staying put, the animosity may be too much for the club. Just when T.O. finally matures, his little mini-me in Cincinnati has to open his mouth yet again.

What Does Woody Think: Its really sad Palmer went down against the Steelers in the playoffs a few years back. There real chance for a Super Bowl has turned once again into the laughing stock of the league. I believe they've only had that one winning season in about 17 or 18 years and things just aren't looking better here. Smith is gone to Tampa Bay, Johnson wants out, on an on and on. Its still too early to take a wide receiver here especially with the uncertainty. They need a linebacker.

Woody's NFL Mock Draft Pick: Keith Rivers, LB, USC
Real Pick: Keith Rivers, LB, USC

10th pick-New Orleans Saints- If you've been under a rock for the last week I'm pretty sure you haven't heard about the Saints possibly getting Lito Sheppard and Jeremy Shockey to come to New Orleans. With all of their secondary woes they definitely need a CB either here or in the later rounds, but the production tails off dramatically.

What Does Woody Think: Well, if I'm the coach, GM, owner, etc., I want to be able to make the deal for at least Sheppard and still keep my 10th pick. Then I would turn and snag the next best OL because the Saints just aren't the same team if one of their backs is missing. Too much pressure is put on Drew Brees and partially why their season lacked after a great run the year before. The other reason? Their secondary skills.

Woody's NFL Mock Draft Pick: Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State
Real Pick: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, TSU
