NFL Week 2: Fantasy Football Sleepers

The Underrated Players that Might Push Your Team Over the Edge in Week 2

Jason Hargreaves
Having tough decisions on who to start for your NFL fantasy football lineup each week is a dilemma faced by every fantasy franchise owner. The football scene is an ever evolving creature and any good fantasy owner worth his or her salt needs to keep up one what's changing, who's facing who, and who might be worth starting over your conventional players. Here are some players at each position that, if you have them or they are available in your league, might give you the edge in week two and help you win your fantasy match up.

Byron Leftwich - QB Tampa Bay Buccaneers

If you read my article on waiver wire picks then you'll see why Byron deserves the QB sleeper spot this week. Leftwich threw for 276 yards and a score last week and is getting ready to face the Bill's weak pass defense. Byron Leftwich should put up similar, if not better, numbers this week against the defense currently ranked worst at defending a pass. If you're in the market for a starting quarterback or just need someone to serve as a #2 in a league that runs 2 quarterbacks, then maybe Byron is the signal caller for you.

Michael Bush - RB Oakland Raiders

It's not often that I would advocate starting an Oakland running back on your fantasy team, but this week that's all out the window. The Raiders face the marred Chiefs defense this week and with Bush splitting carries with Darren McFadden he should be able to pull some decent numbers. The Raiders run offense is never great as they often play from behind, but during week 2 they face one of the few teams they have a shot at beating. The Raiders should be able to utilize their ground game more than normal, so for fantasy owners who need depth at running back this week, look in Michael Bush's direction.

Justin Gage - WR Tennessee Titans

Justin Gage was on very few fantasy football owners radar as a viable top receiver this season. The Titans seem to have pushed that misconception aside and decided to take to the air more often than they did last season. Justin Gage was the primary recipient of that change and was able to grab 7 passes for 78 yards and a score last week. They face a mediocre Houston defense this week, so look for Gage to put up decent numbers again.

John Carlson - TE Seattle Seahawks

John Carlson was one of the NFL's newest treasures at tight end last year and is looking to improve on that this year. He had a game high 6 catches on Sunday which garnered him 95 yards and two scores. He led all NFL tight ends in fantasy football scoring last week. In addition to that he will be playing against the 49ers defense this week which should bode well for his numbers.

Ryan Longwell - K Minnesota Vikings

Picking a sleeper kicker is a difficult thing to do, as very few kickers are listed as elite and drafted in every fantasy league. My choice for this week would be Ryan Longwell who kicked 4 extra points and 2 field goals on Sunday. The Vikings face an ugly Lion's defense this week that allowed Brees to connect in the end-zone six times in their last game. Look for him to get an opportunity to put up some decent points this coming week.

Seattle Seahawks Team Defense

The Seahawks allowed only 77 rushing yards this past weekend and recorded 3 sacks. While not the most stunning numbers, it was enough to rank them sixth in NFL fantasy football standard scoring. They'll be facing a weak San Fransisco offense this week and should be able to improve on their previous numbers.

Weekly match ups and sleepers are the true keys to the fantasy football crown so keeping up with what's going on in the league is of great importance to fantasy owners. The players above may help you turn a loss into a win, filling the missing spot in your lineup for the coming week. Good luck to everyone.
