NFL Wild-Card Tie Breaking Procedure

NFL Rules for Breaking a Tie

Tommy Hayfield
To break a tie for the wild card spot in the playoffs between two clubs here are the rules...

Procedures for Breaking a Tie for a Wild Card Spot
1 If two clubs are from the same division apply the division tie breaking rule.

2 If the tied clubs are from different divisions use the following procedures to break the tie and determine a wild card team.

Two Clubs
1 Head to head, if applicable...In other words who won a head to head match up between the two clubs.

2 Best won-loss-tie percentage in conference...if a tie still exists go to tie breaker number three.

3 Best won-loss-tie percentage in common games played in...there must be at least four common opponents to apply this criteria.

4 Strength of victory...measures the combined number of net points (the combined margin of victory) in each team's victories.

5 Strength of schedule...the strength of schedule is gauged by the (combined) won-loss-tie record of your opponents.

6 Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.

7 Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.

8 Best net points in conference games...this is a power ranking.

9 Best net points in all games...some might also call this a power ranking.

10 Best net touchdowns in all games...if by the time we have gotten through to number ten and there is still a tie then there's the ultimate tie breaker...if the coin lands on an edge there is no further explanation for resolving the issue.

11 Coin toss...I think they would use a half dollar or dollar coin though I'm not positive.
