Justin Miller, the New York Jets kick returner was arrested after being involved in an incident in a New York nightclub. The cornerback has been charged with third-degree assault.

According to ESPN.com, the 23-year-old Pro Bowl returner was arrested Sunday night. after allegedly punching a woman in a nightclub. After causing a police chase that ended at 4:20 am, Miller was arrested. The police report states Miller swung at a male, but instead hit the woman because the man dodged his blow.

"I want to apologize to everyone for this situation, including my family, my teammates, the Jets organization, our fans and the entire NFL," Miller said in a statement. He continued, "I understand that serving in the NFL is an honor and that I have an obligation to behave in a manner that reflects the privilege I have been given.''

As the NFL has recently adopted a new conduct policy, the Jets organization has already informed the commissioner's office of Miller's charges and arrest.

The new policy, announced in April, states that fines will be higher and suspensions will be longer for individuals who violate the policy. Furthermore, the guidelines suggest "repeat violations of the personal conduct policy will be dealt with aggressively, including discipline for repeat offenders even when the conduct itself has not yet resulted in a conviction of a crime."

"It is important that the NFL be represented consistently by outstanding people as well as great football players, coaches, and staff," Commissioner Roger Goodell stated at the release of the policy. "We hold ourselves to higher standards of responsible conduct because of what it means to be part of the National Football League. We have long had policies and programs designed to encourage responsible behavior, and this policy is a further step in ensuring that everyone who is part of the NFL meets that standard. We will continue to review the policy and modify it as warranted."

The NY Jets also gave a statement regarding Miller's arrest, "We expect our players to adhere to the highest standards of conduct off the field and take any allegation of personal misconduct very seriously. Until we've had an opportunity to review all the facts, we will refrain from further comment."

Despite being chosen for the Pro Bowl in his second season in the NFL, this is not Miller's first meeting with law enforcement officials. He was thought to be a first-round pick in the 2005 draft, but he fell after being arrested for disorderly conduct only one week before the draft. The Jets organization selected the Clemson player with the 57th pick in the second round of the draft.
