How Often Do You Get Change?
When you have entered into the habit of always paying with cash the answer is a lot. How many times have you gave the cashier a $5 dollar bill to pay for a purchase that just just under $4? Chances are you kept the dollar and threw the change into a donation jar or just dropped it onto your dresser. When you dropped it on the dresser you never noticed that it fell behind it until well, you just didn't.
How Fast Can Change Add Up?
Loose change adds up a lot faster than you think. If you get $18 cents back from your what you pay for your coffee each morning and get coffee five days a week at the end of the week you'll have ninety cents. When you go grocery shopping chances are you get anywhere from three cents to ninety-nine cents in change each time. Exact amounts will vary. Even if you only shop once a month you'll have this change. Then there is the change from your gasoline purchase when you fill the car completely up, household items and those times you took the kids out for entertainment.
Stop Spending Change
If you've ignored your change you've already stopped spending it but if you haven't you know how handy it can be. Stop spending your loose change and collect it in a jar. When you fill the jar you can find that you have $20 even a $100 depending on the size of the jar. The more quarters in the jar the faster the amount will increase but there are times when you need those quarters. Put as many as you can in the jar without doing without what you absolutely have to have them for.
Goals
You can set goals for those little extras. It doesn't matter what it is that you want it could be an expensive pair of shoes or a weekend away but you can make it the goal of your loose change to pay for it. Taking a picture of what you want and putting it on the bank you're using to collect the change will help you to remain focused on the reason that you don't spend the change.
When you fill the jar simply roll the change or put it into a larger jar with the goal of filling it up. You'll know you've met a large goal when the bottle is completely full. It's your change you can even take enough out to buy those tiny extras along the way.
